Although she spent eight years in Akron, Ohio as a child, Janis Martin Martin always said that Virginia was her home. She was born Janis Martin Darlene Martin in Sutherlin, Virginia on March 27, 1940. When you consider that Ringo Starr, who epitomized a later generation, was born just four months later, you realize how young she was when she started. "I had a mother who was a show business/stage type mother," she told Bob Allen. "Both my father and my uncle were amateur musicians, and I can't remember a time when I didn't play or sing." In February 1951, bluegrass star Jim Eanes settled near the Martins, and Janis Martin joined him on the radio. Too young to play bars, she became a supporting act and local added attraction when the big names came to town. By age fourteen, Janis Martin had graduated to WRVA's 'Old Dominion Barndance' in Richmond when the show was a big deal in the country music world. When Janis Martin joined in 1953, she performed alongside Hawkshaw Hawkins, Jean Shepard, the Carter Sisters, Sonny James, and Martha Carson.

Jorma Kaukonen (later of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna) met a singer named Janis Joplin at a party in San Jose, California, in the fall of 1962. In the years that followed, Janis called on Jorma to accompany her at gigs. "Because we want to remember her spirit"

Rock and roll's first female superstar, Janis Joplin showed that women could be rock singers. she is remembered as the best white blues singer of the 1960s. Famous for her incendiary stage performances, her masochistic tango with the bottle, her tumultuous love life, and her fatal dalliance with drugs, her musical legacy is also a part of Austin's history – how the disheveled folkie/UT student playing at west campus hootenannies and Kenneth Threadgill's bar on North Lamar took off for San Francisco with some other Texans in the Sixties and changed the history of rock & roll.

Digitally remastered two CD set containing a trio of albums from the American singer/songwriter: Night Rains (1979), Restless Eyes (1981) and Uncle Wonderful (1983) plus bonus tracks. Night Rains was Janis' sixth album for CBS and features two of her first-ever co-writes: 'The Other Side Of The Sun' was written with Albert Hammond while 'Fly Too High' was co-written and produced by disco colossus Giorgio Moroder. Restless Eyes was Janis' last album for CBS. The album features guest appearances from Manhattan Transfer's Janis Siegel and Country fiddle player Byron Berline. Uncle Wonderful was recorded for the Australian Festival label and was Janis' last album before a ten year break. Something of an oddity in Janis' catalogue, the album contains a lot of synthesizer backing and spawned a dance hit in 'Heart Skip Too Many Beats', which was co-written and performed with Dan Hartman.

The legendary American pianist Byron Janis, who turns 95 in March 2023, was the first pupil of another iconic pianist - Vladimir Horowitz. Horowitz famously told Janis 'I don't want you to be a 'second Horowitz' I want you to be a 'first Janis'.' Janis certainly established himself on the world stage when he made his Carnegie Hall debut recital in October 1948, garnering a rave review from the New York Times' Olin Downes who praised him as a distinctive artist in his own right destined for a major career. Between 1960 and 1964 Janis made a set of remarkable recordings for the Mercury Living Presence label.
