On this 2001 album, Norwegian pianist/composer/producer Bugge Wesseltoft further refines his concept of 'the new conception of jazz'. Having started out playing stereotypically Nordic ECM-style jazz, Bugge (pronounced 'Boogie') formed the jazzland label and brought out several records in a new, experimental jazz style that fused elements of electronic music with traditional jazz instrumentation to excellent effect.
Sonny Clark's conception of modern jazz is not far removed from his peer group of the late '50s, in that advanced melodic and harmonic ideas override the basic precepts of swing and simplicity. What sets Clark apart from other jazz pianists lies in his conception of democracy to allow his bandmates to steam straight ahead on compositions he has written with them in mind. Though the bulk of this session features the marvelous trumpet/tenor tandem of Donald Byrd and Hank Mobley, it is drummer Art Blakey whose demonstrative presence is heard in full force. He's kicking the band in his own distinctive, inimitable way, rambling through the opener "Junka," based on the changes of "You Go to My Head" with his brand of bomb drops, hard accents, and indefatigable swing…
Which brings us to Norwegian Grammy-winning pianist and composer Wesseltoft's latest for his own Jazzland label. Halfway between the lounge lizard irony of Dimitri from Paris and the lyrical quartet settings of Dave Brubeck or the acoustic Herbie Hancock, Sharing is one of those mould-breaking sets that tend to outlast the vagaries of musical fashion.
Pianist Sonny Clark enjoyed a rich recording career in the golden age of Blue Note. MY CONCEPTION is a combination of a 1959 session that included regulars Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley, Paul Chambers, and Art Blakey with a bonus session recorded two years earlier that featured guitarist Kenny Burrell. Clark's amazing dexterity is featured throughout as he trades hot licks with Mobley, Byrd, and Blakey in the first half and blues runs with Burrell and saxophonist Clifford Jordan in the second. As to be expected with this cast of legends, the performances from either session are pristine and swinging. (Cduniverse.com).
