This Afro-Cuban-flavored set features a leaderless all-star sextet consisting of tenor saxophonist Gato Barbieri (who is showcased on around half of the selections), vibraphonist Mike Mainieri, pianist Bob James, bassist Andy Gonzalez, drummer Lenny White, and percussionist Steve Berrios. "Cubano Chant" and Horace Silver's "Nica's Dream" are performed along with some more recent pieces, falling into the general area of Cubop. Everyone fares well, with Barbieri emerging as the main star.

When Corinna Rottschy and I first met to discuss the project DANZÓN CUBANO, I felt that it would be a special collaboration. I never dreamt it would turn out to be one of the most fulfilling and enriching experiences that I’ve ever had. Furthermore, immortalising this project as an album is a dream come true. I have always loved working with an orchestra. My composition teacher, Mr. Tulio Peramo, told me that nothing compares to the feeling you experience when hearing your music being played by an orchestra for the very first time!

Reissue with latest remastering. Comes with liner notes. The first full album from the great Ray Bryant – recorded shortly after his famous Epic Records session with Betty Carter! The album's got Ray grooving in a hard early soul jazz mode – working in a trio with either Kenny Clarke or Osie Johnson on drums, and Wyatt Reuther on bass – at a level that still shows some influence from other pianists, but already with that unique hard-left style that would make Bryant a big favorite in short years to come. Candido joins in on congas on 2 of the album's best tracks – a hard grooving take on "Night In Tunisia", plus Ray's classic "Cubano Chant", a dancing Latin groover that went onto become an oft-recorded Latin Jazz standard – and other titles include "Pawn Ticket", "Philadelphia Bound", and "Off Shore".

Compiled by the man largely responsible for the 'acid jazz' movement [a tongue in cheek answer to 'acid house'!], Jazz Juice was Gilles Peterson's first series of compilations made when he was still in his early twenties. The selections across these eight volumes were lovingly compiled and came to represent what was to be a resurgence of interest in all things 'cool' in jazz in the eighties, when jazz was brought to the club dancefloors via DJ sets for the first time and lost Afro-Cuban & Latin Jazz, rare grooves and Blue Note releases were keenly revived. Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Sergio Mendes, Jon Hendricks, Marcos Valle, Woody Herman, Dave Brubeck, and more..

Between 1977 and 1980 Barnes attended Leeds College of Music, where he studied saxophone, woodwinds and arranging before moving to London. In 1980 he played with the Midnight Follies Orchestra and the following year was with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, touring Europe until 1983. In that year he left to join the hard-bop band of Tommy Chase, where he attracted attention on the UK jazz scene for the first time. He left Chase in 1986 to co-lead The Jazz Renegades with rock drummer Steve White, with whom he recorded four albums.

Features the latest remastering. Includes a Japanese description. Features original cover artwork. One of the coolest records ever from this unique Australian 50s group featuring the extended "Jazz In D Minor" suite. This '50s and '60s band was modeled on The Modern Jazz Quartet, and featured vibraphonist Jack Brokensha. I discovered these guys way back in the late 50's. I thought they were at least 50 years ahead of their time. The blend of of these instruments Bassoon and flute just blow my mind as they did the first time I heard them way back then. The amazing fact is that those sounds are still the coolest and up to date today. Like I said before, 50 years ahead of their time. They deserve 10 stars.
