Louis Andriessen’s The only one will be released on Nonesuch Records on March 5, 2021. This world premiere performance by the Los Angeles Philharmonic was commissioned by the LA Phil with generous support from the MaddocksBrown Fund for New Music as part of its centennial celebrations. Recorded live in May 2019 at Walt Disney Concert Hall and conducted by LA Phil Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen with solo vocalist Nora Fischer, The only one is available for pre-order now.
Never before released radio transcriptions by jazz's greatest pianist, recorded for KHJ (Los Angeles) in 1940. The discovery of these milestone recordings may be the single most important contribution to jazz in decades. One of the goals of Memphis Archives is to preserve our rich American musical heritage by making these historical recordings available. Without this concern, thousands of songs from the dawn of the recording industry would be lost forever.
This album has an excellent performance by the Duke Ellington Orchestra at a time when its commercial fortunes were near the bottom. The struggles however are not reflected in the music, which is full of enthusiasm and creative invention with trumpeter Clark Terry, tenorman Paul Gonsalves and trombonist Britt Woodman (on "Theme for Trambean") standing out among the many stars during a well-paced program.
