Jean Jacques Perrey

"What I have tried to do," wrote Perrey in the liner notes to this album, "is to bring the electronic sonorities to popular music." This he accomplished via the ondioline, Moog, magnetic tapes, electronic instruments, and other gizmos. He also wrote or co-wrote most of the material on this disc, which sounds like nothing so much as late-'60s instrumental "mood" music albums as refracted through a slightly more ambitious, electronic lens. It's really not something you can put on again and again, but it's kind of fun nonetheless. The arrangements have a kind of desperately trendy go-go-type charm, borrowing occasionally from familiar folk and pop melodies like "Frere Jacques" and "Georgy Girl."

The Amazing New Electronic Pop Sound of Jean Jacques Perrey is the sixth studio album by French electronic musician Jean-Jacques Perrey, released in 1968 on the Vanguard Records label.

In 2015–2016, Perrey became friends with Belgian-born Australian multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Wouter de Backer (known professionally as Gotye). De Backer worked with Perrey to preserve his recorded legacy. After purchasing two vintage Ondiolines (an electronic keyboard closely associated with Perrey), de Backer formed the Ondioline Orchestra in New York. The sextet made their debut performing two shows in tribute to Perrey at National Sawdust, in Brooklyn, on 22 November 2016. Perrey, who lived in Switzerland, had planned to attend the tribute, but died before it took place. In May 2017, de Backer launched a new record label, Forgotten Futures, of which the first release was Jean-Jacques Perrey et son Ondioline, a compilation of rare and previously unreleased Perrey recordings.

A pioneer of electronic music, Paris-born Jean Jacques Perrey became fascinated with the possibilities of futuristic music early in life. While studying medicine he met Georges Jenny, the inventor of the Ondioline, a precursor to the synthesiser. He immediately quit college and travelled around Europe demonstrating the instrument. In 1959, at the age of 30, he moved to New York. Influenced by the theories of musique concrète, he developed an experimental studio where he made music with tape loops and other manipulations. He also met Robert Moog, becoming one of the first to play the Moog synthesiser.

The musical duo Perrey and Kingsley are pioneers in the field of electronic music. Before their collaboration, starting in 1965, electronic music was considered to be purely avant-garde. They were among the first to create electronic music for the general public.

Loose and Juicy is a treasure chest of rare grooves for jazz, hip-hop, and funk enthusiasts. Cammille Yarbrough's track "Take Your Praise," was the source of Norman Cook's (Fatboy Slim) hit single "Praise You." Captured here on CD, Yarbrough captivates the listener with her poetic vocals and raw funk. Bunky Green's sizzling sax work on "Funk Ain't a Word" is one of many surprises from the Vanguard vaults that make the album worth buying. Jean Jacques Perry's spaced-out funk anthem "E.V.A." is sampled all over the contemporary rap world, including on Ice-T's "The Lane," House of Pain's "Fed Up (remix)," and Gang Starr's "Just to Get a Rep." In addition, Norman Cook fleshes out "E.V.A."'s drum and bass on an inspired big-beat remix to close the album.
