Jean-Michel Pilc has lots of surprises in store for listeners in New Dreams. Well accompanied by bassist Thomas Bramerie and either Ari Hoenig or Mark Mondesir on drums, his unusual, consistently twisting arrangement of the standard "But Not for Me" defies predictable paths, darting in and out of the melody as he builds the tension. Thad Jones' lush ballad "A Child Is Born" finds him alternating between substitutions in each hand, creating a dreamy, impressionist flavor and ending the piece mid-phrase for effect.

Jean-Michel Pilc's first solo piano CD is a thought-provoking mix of originals, standards, and classic jazz compositions. His jaunty approach to the venerable "St. Louis Blues" is extremely playful, incorporating dazzling post-bop runs. "My Favorite Things" is recast in a dark setting, adding hand-muted and plucked piano strings along with thunderous tremolos, as if an intense thunderstorm were approaching.

It’s no coincidence Jasper Somsen’s 3rd (and later this year 4th) Challenge Records album features an international piano trio line up. Recent years performing and/or recording in trio with a.o. Enrico Pieranunzi, Joey Calderazzo, John Beasley, Jeff Ballard, Justin Faulkner and André Ceccarelli, he is much sought after by (especially) pianists.
