Cet exercice m'a d'abord permis d'éclairer, à l'intention des lecteurs qui me suivent, l'arrière-plan de mes essais sur Dieu. Il n'y a pas d'un côté ma vie et de l'autre mes idées. Ma vie et mes idées forment un écheveau indémêlable.
Ce livre de souvenirs m'a fourni aussi l'occasion de porter témoignage sur ce qu'a pu connaître de marquant, en France et dans plusieurs pays où j'ai vécu, un homme de ma génération. …
