Le groupe écossais The Jesus and Mary Chain, auréolé d'une réputation trouble pour ses concerts chaotiques, a eu une influence importante et durable dans le rock. Combinant une sensibilité mélodique et pop à un goût prononcé pour la saturation, le groupe a donné au rock britannique quelques-uns de ses plus essentiels albums des années 80, en premier lieu desquels l'incontournable Psychocandy (1985). Le groupe se sépare en 1999, après un dernier album l'année précédente. Il se reforme en 2007 et se lance dans une série de festivals et de tournées, en Europe, en Amérique du Nord, en Australie et au Japon. Très rapidement, Jim Reid, le chanteur, assure que la reformation se traduira par un nouvel album studio. Mais les années passent, seulement rythmées par la gestion de leur back catalogue (The Power of Negative Thinking : B-Sides & Rarities, Upside Down : The Best of The Jesus And Mary Chain et The Complete Vinyl Collection. Plusieurs fois, la sortie du nouvel opus est annoncée comme imminente, mais elle n'intervient qu'en 2017, sous le nom de Damage and Joy, mettant fin à 19 ans de disette.

Like the Velvet Underground, their most obvious influence, the chart success of the Jesus and Mary Chain was virtually nonexistent, but their artistic impact was incalculable; quite simply, the Scottish group made the world safe for white noise, orchestrating a sound dense in squalling feedback that served as an inspiration to everyone from My Bloody Valentine to Dinosaur Jr. Though the supporting players drifted in and out of focus, the heart of the Mary Chain remained vocalists and guitarists William and Jim Reid, Scottish-born brothers heavily influenced not only by underground legends like the Velvets and the Stooges but also by the sonic grandeur and pop savvy of Phil Spector and Brian Wilson. One of the most important and revered bands of the post-punk and alternative rock scenes, the Jesus and Mary Chain's artistic impact is incalculable. Heavily influenced not only by the dangerous sounds of bands like the Velvet Underground and the Stooges, but also by the sonic grandeur and pop savvy of the '60s-era girl group sound and the Beach Boys, the band was able to find the beauty in noise, while both celebrating pop conventions and thoroughly subverting them. Recorded at the Hollywood Palladium, Los Angeles in 2018, ‘Sunset 666’ is a new live aIbum from The Jesus and Mary Chain, due out August 4th 2023 on Fuzz Club. In 1990, a young American band, full of a precise kind of noise and darkness, were special guests on the US tour being undertaken by a group who had noise and darkness, poise and catharsis of their own. The young band: Nine Inch Nails. Those headliners: The Jesus and Mary Chain. Almost thirty years later, an invitation was extended. Would the Reid brothers care to reverse the roles and open for Nine Inch Nails on their own North American tour? Trent Reznor had been a fan of the Mary Chain, and influenced by them since hearing 'Psychocandy', so it felt a good fit and the Reid brothers accepted.

Psychocandy is the debut studio album by Scottish rock band the Jesus and Mary Chain. It was released in November 1985 on Blanco y Negro Records. The album is considered a landmark recording: its combination of guitar feedback and noise with traditional pop melody and structure proved influential on the forthcoming shoegazing genre and alternative rock in general. The band moved from its abrasive sound with the release of their second album, 1987's Darklands. In 2003, the album was ranked number 268 on Rolling Stone magazine's "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list, and 269 in a 2012 revised list. The magazine also ranked the album number 45 on its list of the 100 Best Debut Albums of All Time. In 2002 Pitchfork listed Psychocandy as the 23rd best album of the 1980s. In their 2018 update of the list, the album was listed at number 40. The album was also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. PopMatters included Psychocandy in their list of the "12 Essential 1980s Alternative Rock Albums" saying, "it may still be the only noise pop LP anyone ever really needs to own".
