Joan saw the brilliance of Bob Dylan from the get-go, and her admiration came to full flower on this 1969 set of Dylan songs. The album reached #30 and features her definitive rendition of Love Is Just a Four-Letter Word plus Tears of Rage; Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands; I Shall Be Released ; unissued live performances of Blowin' in the Wind and It Ain't Me Babe , and more!

Listening to this album a quarter century after the fact is an eerie experience; as a Baez fan of the same period and of a politically similar orientation at the time, this reviewer was shocked by the vitriol of the opening number, "(Ain't Gonna Let Nobody) Turn Me Around," especially given that the shows where this album was recorded dated from 1975. Was anyone (except maybe the Reagan-ites) ever really that angry at the Ford administration? Otherwise, Baez's trembling falsetto is in beautiful shape on songs ranging from Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" to "Oh, Happy Day."

To accompany the documentary film Joan Baez: How Sweet the Sound, soundtrack producer Mark Spector assembled this hourlong compilation album. The film itself is biographical, with only snippets of performances, but here full-length tracks have been drawn from the albums Joan Baez in San Francisco, One Day at a Time, Blessed Are…, Carry It On, and Live at Newport, as well as the BBC documentary Joan Baez in Concert (not the same as the album Joan Baez in Concert) and the NBC TV special Hard Rain (not exactly the same as the Bob Dylan album Hard Rain).

History's ear hasn't been kind to Joan Baez: in retrospect, set against the traditional voices whose material she interpreted, her own versions seem painfully pretty, her soprano icy and removed. But it's hard to gauge now the force of her first record, a folk-revival landmark. Released in 1960 after a triumphant Newport Festival appearance, the record had deep material and emotion that few of her urban folk contemporaries possessed. Her version of "John Riley" is compelling, "East Virginia" glowing, and "Silver Dagger" concentrated, while "Preso Numero Nueve" showed her future political turn. This 2001 reissue offers two previously unreleased tracks plus an expanded version of "John Riley."
