Black Orpheus the film by Marcel Camus, and its soundtrack, were the signposts by which the world first learned of samba and bossa nova and fell in love with it. Therefore, it is staggering to consider that it took until 2008 for a definitive edition of the soundtrack to be released, one that assembled all the songs and music heard in the film. After all, this is the score that created the partnership of composer Antonio Carlos Jobim and poet Vinicius de Moraes, and introduced the brilliant and influential guitarist Luiz Bonfá. Universal France has assembled all the sound recordings into one 17-track volume. These include the two original 45 EPs, and the 10" 33 rpm album, as well as some tracks that have never appeared before now…

Orfeu da Conceição (Orpheus of the Conception) is a stage play with music in three acts by Vinicius de Moraes and music by Antônio Carlos Jobim. It premiered in 1956 in Rio de Janeiro. The play became the basis for the films Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus, 1959) and Orfeu (1999), and for the musicals Orfeu (Brazil, 2010) and Black Orpheus (Broadway, 2014).The play sets the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice in a contemporary favela in Rio de Janeiro during the Brazilian Carnival. Started in 1954, the play was first performed on 25 September 1956 at the Teatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro[4] with a stage setting by Oscar Niemeyer. Abdias do Nascimento was in the original cast.

Antonio Carlos Jobim as a symphonic composer? Jobim, arguably the finest songwriter of the 1960s and the founder of bossa nova, was classically trained and wrote some pieces along the way for a string orchestra. In addition to his arrangements, his compositions were arranged for an orchestra by the likes of Claus Ogerman, Nelson Riddle, Eumir Deodato, Dori Caymmi, Paulo Jobim, and Mario Adnet for this project. The double CD does not have much bossa nova and, although some of the melodies are familiar, others are very obscure and in two cases were previously unrecorded.

Bossa Nova is palm trees swaying, it is like melting sugar in hot coffee, it is the setting sun and warm sand underfoot. It is the sound and beat of Brazil, it is one of the world's coolest musical styles and it remains to this day one of the world's great musical treasures.
