Three years after the release of their first collaboration “The Lady Is A Tramp”, Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga are back with a brand new collaboration – a full album of classic jazz standards: Cheek To Cheek. Sadly it's not often we get to feature a musician who is still alive and performing and recording today and who actually fought in the second world war 'a front row seat in hell' as he would later describe it. Born in 1926, Anthony Benedetto, would later become Tony Bennett, courtesy of a name change instigated by Bob Hope while Bennett was touring with him following a performance by Bennett that Bob had witnessed with Pearl Bailey who 'discovered' him in 1949 and asked him to open for her in Greenwich Village. By age 10, Tony was already performing in public and he would go on to become somewhat of a pop star of his generation alongside another crooner of the era Frank Sinatra. We are focusing on the later years of the 1950s when Tony Bennett who had been signed as a pop singer to Columbia Records in 1950 by legendary producer and A&R man Mitch Miller, decided to make a musical adjustment towards a more jazz influenced style.

Tony Bennett Der Schatten von Frank Sinatra ist groß, übergroß für die meisten anderen Künstler des Genres. Doch nicht für seinen persönlichen Freund, den Jazz-Crooner Tony Bennett. Wenn auch im selben Metier zu Hause, gelingt ihm über Jahrzehnte hinweg andauernder Erfolg beim Publikum sowie die Entwicklung eines ganz eigenen Stils. Er kommt am 3. August 1926 im New Yorker Stadtteil Queens als Anthony Dominick Benedetto zur Welt. Den Sohn italienischstämmiger Einwanderer zieht es bereits im Alter von zehn Jahren auf die Bühne, zunächst im Rahmen des Singens anlässlich einer Brücken-Einweihung. Rasch steht für ihn fest, dass er sein Glück im Showgeschäft suchen will. So sammelt er bis in die vierziger Jahre hinein praktische Gesangs-Erfahrungen mit Auftritten in kleinen Lokalen. Während seiner 1946 endenden Dienstzeit in der US-Army, die ihn auch nach Deutschland führt, arbeitet Benedetto in Militär-Orchestern. Zurück in den Staaten, macht er sich unter dem Pseudonym Joe Bari einen Namen.

Mighty Joe Young (Young was using the name well before the movie of the same name was released) arrived on the Chicago blues scene from Louisiana a bit late in the game and never really received the critical attention he deserved. Add in health problems related to a pinched nerve in his neck, and Young's solo recording dates were relatively few (he was, however, an active sideman, working for a time as Otis Rush's rhythm guitarist) given his obvious talent as an electric guitarist and as a strong and sturdy vocalist. This solid set, The Sonet Blues Story, was tracked in Chicago in 1972 and was originally released as part of Samuel Charters' Legacy of the Blues series on the Stockholm-based Sonet Records imprint…
