"Songs For Drella" may be one of the most emotional pieces of music I have ever encountered. Not only is this disc a tribute to Andy Warhol, but it may also be the finest work of both Lou Reed, and John Cale. These songs feel so personal, one feels as if one is invading the very souls of each of these brilliant songwriters. While telling Andy's story they reveal much of themselves. Reed & Cale take turns covering every conceivable aspect of Andy Warhol's world. From art, work, style, childhood, fear, and envy. No stone is left unturned. One of the most haunting moments on this disc is "The Dream" by John Cale. A true masterpiece of inner terrors, and human weakness. Lou Reed shines on "Work", "Nobody But Me", and most notably on "Hello It's Me". Here we can hear Lou's sadness, and longing for a friend lost. This album is heart wrenching, enlightened, and unimpeachable as music can get. Wether you're a fan of Lou Reed, John Cale, The Velvet Underground, or Andy Warhol; you will find beauty and truth in the music found on this emotional powder keg. Very, very recommended !!!!!

Right from the start, Cale makes it clear he's not messing around on Fear. If his solo career before then had been a series of intriguing stylistic experiments, here he meshes it with an ear for his own brand of pop and rock, accessible while still clearly being himself through and through. Getting musical support from various Roxy Music veterans like Brian Eno, Phil Manzanera, and Andy Mackay didn't hurt at all, and all the assorted performers do a great job carrying out Cale's vision.

John Cale had the strongest avant-garde credentials of anyone in the Velvet Underground, but he was also the Velvet whose solo career was the least strongly defined by his work with the band, and his first solo album, Vintage Violence, certainly bears this out. While the banshee howls of Cale's viola and the percussive stab of his keyboard parts were his signature sounds on The Velvet Underground and Nico and White Light/White Heat, Cale's first solo album, 1970's Vintage Violence, was a startlingly user-friendly piece of mature, intelligent pop whose great failing may have been being a shade too sophisticated for radio. And anyone expecting the fevered psychosis that Cale let loose on later albums like Fear and Sabotage/Live is in for a surprise; Cale has rarely sounded this well-adjusted on record, though his lyrical voice is usually a bit too cryptic to stand up to a literal interpretation of his words. If Cale wanted to clear out a separate and distinct path for his solo career, he certainly did that with Vintage Violence, though it turned out to be only one of many roads he would follow in the future.

Church of Anthrax is a collaborative studio album by musicians John Cale and Terry Riley. It was released in February 1971 by record label Columbia, nearly a year after the material was recorded; in fact, it was recorded prior to Cale's solo debut Vintage Violence. This album marks a cross-pollination. Cale may have been returning to his Minimalist roots, but he still had the sound of VU’s white noise ringing in his ears and as a consequence managed to produce a brilliantly messy, repetitious rock record.

John Cale was never very kind to his solo debut, Vintage Violence. When it was released in early 1970, Cale had been out of The Velvet Underground for less than two years. He wanted to prove he could be the songwriter, the person penning the words and melodies behind which a band could work. “I was masked on Vintage Violence,” he wrote much later. “You’re not really seeing the personality.” Indeed, Cale’s personality as a polyglot seemingly interested in everything emerged more and more on his next two solo albums, his only two for Reprise: 1972’s bracing and exploratory classical sojourn, The Academy in Peril, and 1973’s masterclass in anxious but accessible songcraft, Paris 1919. By reissuing both records in tandem, Domino—Cale’s home now for a dozen years—affirms the artistic fearlessness Cale then fostered at the edge of 30, when all of music seemed like one inviting playpen. This artist-sanctioned reissue of The Academy In Peril is remastered from the original tapes.
