"The Legend of Johnny Cash" is a single-disc compilation album of country music legend Johnny Cash's career. It is the first such album to contain material from Cash's American Recordings era in addition to songs from his time at Sun and Columbia. It was released on October 25, 2005 on the Island/American/Columbia/Legacy record labels and tied to the release of the Cash biopic Walk the Line. In the wake of that film's success its sales made the compilation an overwhelming success, selling over two million copies.

While Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison, the 1968 album that made Cash a household word, spent only two weeks at No. 1, this 1969 follow-up topped the charts for 20 weeks. As with Folsom, the San Quentin LP had to be edited due to space limitations. Now, 31 years after the fact, the show can at last be heard in true perspective. All the original performances hold up, including the album's hit single: Shel Silverstein's "A Boy Named Sue," presented unbleeped for the first time. Equally impressive are the eight restored tracks and unexpurgated between-song patter. Cash's opening renditions of "Big River" and "I Still Miss Someone" are bracing. So are four closing songs teaming Cash with his complete performing troupe (the Carter Family, Carl Perkins, and the Statler Brothers). Their gospel performances ("He Turned the Water into Wine," "The Old Account," and an early version of "Daddy Sang Bass") are electrifying, as is a concluding medley featuring everyone. Cash is presented here at his roaring, primal best.

American V: A Hundred Highways is the long-awaited album of Johnny Cash's final recordings, the basic tracks for which (i.e., Cash's vocals) were recorded in 2002-2003, with overdubs added by producer Rick Rubin after his death on September 12, 2003, at age 71…

This recording was taped live in Stuttgart in 1981 and was co-produced by Cash's future son in law, Rodney Crowell. This set is special in that it brought three of the original Sun Record stars together at about the same time that the mysterious "million dollar quartet" recordings were beginning to surface. The listener will be grabbed in particular when Lewis weighs in with Whole Lotta Shakin', then the trio and the backup band, Cash's band with W.S.Holland (Perkin's original drummer) and Lewis's sideman, Ken Lovelace cook on some southern gospel standards. Lewis contributes several inspired piano solos and backs up Perkins' vocals in a way that makes him (Perkins) reach back for more.
This disc shows why Cash was, and still is pure country and why Perkins and Lewis could straddle the fence between Country and Rock'n Roll. This recording also lets us hear what might of been had someone had the foresight to capture these greats earlier, say in the early seventies. But better late than never, and that has resulted in this magnificent and very enjoyable album !!

Folsom Prison looms large in Johnny Cash's legacy, providing the setting for perhaps his definitive song and the location for his definitive album, At Folsom Prison. The ideal blend of mythmaking and gritty reality, At Folsom Prison is the moment when Cash turned into the towering Man in Black, a haunted troubadour singing songs of crime, conflicted conscience, and jail…

There are only so many artists whose recording careers were expansive enough that you could collect 100 songs on five discs and not run out of worthwhile material, but Johnny Cash was just that kind of musician, a man who turned out memorable music at a remarkable pace during his glory days in the '50s, '60s, and '70s. 100 Hits Legends: Johnny Cash is, as the title suggests, a box set that includes 100 tunes from Cash's nearly 60 years of record-making, and remarkably enough, the bulk of this material was recorded during Cash's relatively brief tenure with Sun Records, his first label that put his music on wax from 1954 to 1958…

På Österåker ("At Österåker") is a live album by country singer Johnny Cash released on Columbia Records in 1973, making it his 43rd overall release. The album features Cash's concert at the Österåker Prison in Sweden held on October 3, 1972. Its predecessors in concept are the more notable At San Quentin and At Folsom Prison. Unlike the aforementioned, På Österåker does not contain any of Cash's most well-known songs; it does, however, include a version of Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee". The majority of the songs featured in the original release would remain unique to this concert recording, though Cash would later record a studio version of "City Jail" for his 1977 album, The Last Gunfighter Ballad. Some lyrics from "City Jail" taken from the protagonist's dialogue with a policeman would later be incorporated by Cash into live performances of "Orange Blossom Special".
