Another gem from the ECM catalogue. Brooklyn-born jazz horn player John Clark hasn’t made many records as a bandleader, but has been hugely prolific and has recorded and performed with Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, Chick Corea, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, and Leonard Bernstein, among many others. He’s still a faculty member at Manhattan School of Music.

Whether it’s the hassles and hurdles that arise for a musician touring the world, the run-of-the-mill mishaps that inevitably disrupt daily life, or the barrage of bad news constantly clamoring for attention; Bria Skonberg succinctly captures the hectic tenor of our times in the title of her latest album, Nothing Never Happens. The trumpeter and vocalist found her own escape in order to craft a new set of originals and artfully chosen covers that spans the emotional and stylistic spectrum.

Peabo Bryson has had an amazing couple of years, collecting both Oscars and Grammys for chart-topping duets with Celine Dion ("Beauty & The Beast") and Regina Belle ("A Whole New World (Aladdin’s Theme)"). Those and jazz/pop charter "By Time This Night Is Over," which was on Kenny G’s "Breathless" album, are included on a strong "Through The Fire" album that dishes up the greatest hits, plus a few that someday may be. Among the new tunes are Diane Warren-penned first single “Why Goodbye” and Bryson originals "Same Ol' Love," a sultry delight, and sax-spiced "Spanish Eyes."

It might take more than walking 100 miles to discover the essence of leadership, but that's how far Sander A. Flaum, a 65-year-old "corporate lifer," and his son, Jonathon, a 35-year-old philosopher/playwright/businessman walked while discovering "the 9 P's of leadership" (people, purpose, passion, performance, persistence, perspective, paranoia, principles and practice) and, along the way, each other.

Leo Blokhuis is an award winning author and music journalist familiar to Dutch TV audiences as host of a prime time music show ‘Top 2000 a Gogo’. In his latest ‘sound book’ he writes of the period in the 60s and 70s when soul and country music traditions married together to create country soul and vice versa. The book part is 176 pages of Dutch text and since my near neighbours language is not one of the main languages that I can read I am unable to comment on Blokhuis’ writing skills. What I can say is that the text is interspersed with photographs of significant artists, record labels and a page on each featured song that lists studio details and participating musicians. Clearly a labour of love the book looks great and feels substantial.
