A folk singer with a poet's spirit, Joni Mitchell is among music history's most poignant and influential songwriters. A veteran of the '60s folk circuit, Mitchell first came to prominence as a songwriter, composing oft-covered tunes of the era "Chelsea Morning," "The Circle Game," and "Both Sides Now." By the time Judy Collins brought the latter into the charts in 1968, Mitchell had released her David Crosby-produced solo debut, Song to a Seagull. Mitchell became part of Los Angeles' folk-rock scene, but worked from a different compositional aesthetic, utilizing alternate guitar tunings and writing from a stark personal perspective. These qualities shone on Clouds, a self-produced 1969 LP that won the Grammy for Best Folk Performance, setting the stage for her 1971 masterpiece Blue, an album that has served as the cornerstone of introspective singer/songwriter music since the '70s.

Sad, spare, and beautiful, Blue is the quintessential confessional singer/songwriter album. Forthright and poetic, Joni Mitchell’s songs are raw nerves, tales of love and loss (two words with relative meaning here) etched with stunning complexity; even tracks like “All I Want,” “My Old Man,” and “Carey” - the brightest, most hopeful moments on the record - are darkened by bittersweet moments of sorrow and loneliness. At the same time that songs like “Little Green” (about a child given up for adoption) and the title cut (a hymn to salvation supposedly penned for James Taylor) raise the stakes of confessional folk-pop to new levels of honesty and openness, Mitchell’s music moves beyond the constraints of acoustic folk into more intricate and diverse territory, setting the stage for the experimentation of her later work. Unrivaled in its intensity and insight, Blue remains a watershed.

Here we capture Joni Mitchell's performances at a benefit gig in Berkley, California on Labour Day weekend 1978. The undoubted highlights are the embryonic versions of 'The Chair In The Sky' and 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' (both destined to appear on her 1979 album Mingus). For these Joni calls on her good friend Herbie Hancock and the resulting duets are essential listening for fans of both artists. There are also two very different acapella versions of 'The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines' and solo renditions of 'The Wolf That Lives In Lindsey' and 'Furry Sings The Blues'. The version of her classic 'Circle Game' is taken from the closing encore of the event and features The Persuasions, Tim Hardin, Tom Paxton and Odetta. Every performance by Joni Mitchell is an important event but those present at the Greek Theatre in 1978 witnessed something truly unique. Professionally re-mastered WBUR-FM radio broadcast, complete with liner notes and archival imagery.

Prior to this moment, only in our wildest and sauciest dreams could we picture Sufjan Stevens, Björk, Brad Mehldau, Prince and James Taylor rolling around together. Nonesuch Records, however, has made our dreams a reality.
Joni Mitchell covers dot the musical landscape the way Tim Hortons doughnut shacks line the highways of Ontario. It's a little surprising, then, that the first Mitchell tribute album to be released on a major U.S. label didn't emerge until 2007, which was coincidentally the same year Mitchell was scheduled to release Shine, her first studio effort to appear in some ten years. And as far as tribute albums go, A Tribute to Joni Mitchell isn't half bad. The compilation is split up between songs that were recorded specifically for the tribute album, such as Sufjan Stevens' "A Free Man in Paris," and those that were recorded and released previously, such as James Taylor's "River"…

Joni Mitchell was at a turning point 50 years ago. After making four acclaimed albums with Reprise Records, including her 1971 masterpiece Blue, she left the label to join the brand-new Asylum Records in 1972. Over the next seven years, Mitchell would record some of the most acclaimed music of her career while changing her musical direction by adding more jazz elements into her songwriting. The evolution culminated in 1979 with Mingus, her collaboration with jazz titan Charles Mingus, and her studio last album for Asylum.
