Joni Mitchell Archives – Vol. 2: The Reprise Years (1968–1971) is a five-disc box set by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, originally set to be released on October 29, 2021, by Rhino Records, but later delayed to November 12, 2021.

The 5-CD collection includes a 40-page booklet that features many unseen photos from Mitchell's personal collection as well as new liner notes featuring conversations between writer/filmmaker Cameron Crowe and Mitchell, who recently spent a couple of Sunday afternoons together discussing her archives.

For starters, hunters should not get their hopes up about any unreleased material on this box set – there are exactly three cuts, two are unfinished demo versions of songs already on their respective albums – "Two Grey Rooms" and "Good Friends" – as well as an unreleased cover version of Dylan's "It's All Over Now Baby Blue." But that's fine, just fine. The bottom line is that these records haven't been available in some time due to the profound folly of the accountants who run the Geffen imprint who wouldn't know art if it were hanging in their living rooms. The box is stunning, gorgeous even in its earth-tone glory with a brilliant inset photograph by former husband and producer Larry Klein. There are poignant photos, the albums in their original sleeves, a completely searing unapologetic set of liner notes from Mitchell, reproductions of paintings, and more. Mitchell's comments, which introduce many of the songs here, are priceless. These and the liner notes are almost worth the price of the box. The only design problem seems to be that the booklet falls apart a bit from its stitching, but that's not really a big deal.

'The Asylum Albums (1972-1975)', the next instalment in the Joni Mitchell archive series, explores the beginning of that prolific era. The collection features newly remastered versions of 'For the Roses' (1972), 'Court and Spark' (1974), the double live album 'Miles of Aisles' (1974), and 'The Hissing of Summer Lawns' (1975). All four were remastered by Bernie Grundman.

For the third album collection of the Joni Mitchell Archives project, The Asylum Albums (1976-1980) covers what is arguably the knottiest and most challenging period in a career known for being knotty and challenging. While there are certainly fans who have a preference for Mitchell's diaristic/post-folk sounds of the late '60s/early '70s Reprise era or the exploratory fusions of pop and jazz of her first three Asylum albums, most of those fans can find space to love all (or at least most) of the work she released between 1968 and 1975. Utterly unbound by genre formality or commercial considerations—and also very explicitly chafing at the expectations put upon her by the music business—these three studio albums (and one equally unapologetic live album) proved to be much more divisive.

From her beginnings as part of the Laurel canyon set, Joni Mitchell has gone on to become one of the most accomplished singer songwriters of the late 20th century. Throughout her career her music has continued to evolve and astound ranging from folk, pop, jazz and even avant-garde. Joni Mitchell has many contemporaries like Carole King, Janis Joplin, or Aretha Franklin, but none experimented so much with their artistic identities or so bravely explored territory outside of the accepted confines of pop music, resulting in a creative legacy which paved the way for performers ranging from Patti Smith and Chrissie Hynde to Madonna and Laura Marling." This box set contains 10 of Mitchell's studio albums from 1968 to 1979 and includes her critically and commercially acclaimed albums Blue and Court and Spark. Both have been named as among the best albums ever made with Blue peaking at #3 in the UK albums chart. Hit singles included in the set are 'Both Sides,' 'Now,' 'Big Yellow Taxi,' 'California,' 'Free Man in Paris' and many more.

One of the most celebrated singer-songwriters of the 20th Century, some of her most successful and critically acclaimed work includes "Blue", "Ladies of the Canyon", "Court and Spark", and "Both Sides, Now". The recipient of a 2002 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, she was also ranked #72 in Rolling Stone's 2003 list of the greatest guitarists of all time. In 1997, Mitchell was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
