At some point in the early 21st century, Radiohead became something more than a band: they became a touchstone for everything that is fearless and adventurous in rock, inheriting the throne from David Bowie, Pink Floyd, and the Talking Heads. The latter group gave the band its name – it's an album track on 1986's True Stories – but Radiohead never sounded much like the Heads, nor did they take much from Bowie, apart from their willingness to experiment.

'Shapes: In Space' is the latest in Tru Thoughts' series of essential label compilations put together by A&R and co-owner (and renowned DJ) Robert Luis. Encompassing the best of the Brighton based label's eclectic and international current roster, as well as some classic cuts and three exclusive tracks. As well as the sonic variety, this collection also highlights the diverse origins of the music on the label. From the UK, there are the soulful, forward-looking and beat-laden offerings of rising stars Werkha, Bryony Jarman-Pinto and Harleighblu, while from the USA there is Moonchild, Lost Midas, The Seshen and Space Captain. Repping the authentic New Orleans sound, Grammy-nominated Hot 8 Brass Band have continued to win more and more fans across the world since they first started working with Tru Thoughts a decade ago.

Wildfire, perfectly captures in a word the burning power of Elles Bailey’s vocals and stage presence as she sings blues that have captured in its blue flame, country, roots and soul. The voice is smoky with textures and tones that pulls out lyrics and coats them in Elles special brand of Bristol fanned Wildfire. Often the word unique is used when talking about an artist especially on a debut album. In the case of Elles Bailey it is most definitely true. Her blues fuelled sound is lived-in, and is the fortuitous result of a childhood illness. Having recovered from both viral and bacterial pneumonia; her voice at the age of three had changed, leading to her ENT specialist prophetically observing, “If she ever wants to sing, she’ll be a natural blues vocalist!”
