Joy House

Two CD compilation featuring the complete Capital Records recordings from this Bay Area band. Recorded between 1970-72, this set includes their three albums Joy Of Cooking, Closer To The Ground and Castles. Joy Of Cooking were formed in Berkeley (San Francisco Bay Area) during the hippie era (1967). Their fusion sound, incorporating folk, rock, jazz, gospel and blues, had little in common with acid-rock: it heralded a new era of "creativity" and of stylistic re-evalutation. One of the first bands led by female musicians, and one of the earliest to deal with feminist issues within popular music, the Joy Of Cooking were led by pianist Toni Brown (who had graduated in creative writing) and guitarist Terry Garthwaite (a folk-singer and an aspiring sociologist). The three-unit rhythm section, on the other hand, was entirely male.

Her third original full-length album vividly captures the human experience with a profound simplicity; celebrating the little details & simple pleasures of being alive, while giving voice to some of life’s most complex experiences in a way only she can. Joy Oladokun has unveiled a deluxe edition of her acclaimed album, Proof of Life. The project is out now via Amigo Records/Verve Forecast/Republic Records. Alongside the album’s thirteen original tracks, the extended edition also features new songs “Black Car” and “Wild Enough,” as well as alternative versions of album tracks “Sweet Symphony” featuring Chris Stapleton, “Somehow,” and “Keeping the Light On,” among others.

Pianos have featured in house music since day one. There's just something about the combination of looping piano chords and a skipping house groove which works so well. In contemporary dance music the piano still remains intrinsically linked to house, though it was in the late '80s and '90s that the true piano house classics were created. We took it to our hearts. The emotionally charged piano riff became a defining motif of UK dance music. Producers knew they only had to alight upon a suitably uplifting three-chord piano hook in order to unleash a tide of misty nostalgia for rave's halcyon days.
