Based on August Strindberg’s celebrated 1888 play Miss Julie, chamber opera Juliana (2018) unites composer Joseph Phibbs and librettist Laurie Slade in a modern tale about the power of money, immigration politics, drugs and the blurring of sexual boundaries. In confronting these issues head-on, the power of aristocracy is replaced by that of plutocracy.

Mit der Identität ist es so eine Sache: Wie fragil es ist, sie an Nationalität festzumachen, scheint noch nicht zu allen durchgedrungen zu sein. Die Geschichte der Sängerin und Songwriterin Juliana Blumenschein ist dafür ein Beispiel: Ihre Eltern wanderten aus Brasilien nach Deutschland aus, sie wurde 1992 in Freiburg geboren und wuchs in einem Örtchen bei Karlsruhe auf. Ihr Urgroßvater wiederum war vor dem ersten Weltkrieg aus Deutschland nach Brasilien emigriert. Sie selbst sieht sich als Deutsch-Brasilianerin, aber schon früh war klar, was ihre eigentliche Heimat ist: die Musik.

Heavily influenced by the well-known Enya, Juliana is a new age/adult contemporary vocalist who has favored a very ethereal, calm, and tranquil approach. But unlike former Clannad member Enya, Juliana is not from Ireland; the singer lives in England, where she has done her recording. One of the things that Juliana (who plays the Native American flute but is primarily a vocalist) shares with Enya is an interest in Celtic mythology; Juliana has combined her Celtic interests with stereotypical new age themes and imagery. And like Enya, Juliana has both pop and folk influences.

"With "Juliana Hatfield Sings The Police" I am continuing the project that I started last year with my "Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John" album. I hope to continue to go deep into covering artists that were important to me in my formative years. The songs I’ve chosen seem to resonate in the present moment. “Rehumanize Yourself”, “Landlord”, and “Murder By Numbers” explore ugly kinds of nationalism, abuses of power, and the mendacity of large swaths of the ruling class. And then there are the timeless, relatable psychodramas: “Every Breath You Take”, “Can’t Stand Losing You”, “Canary In A Coalmine”. In the Police, each player’s style was so distinctive, accomplished and unique that I didn’t even attempt to match any of it; for anyone to try and play drums like Stewart Copeland would be a thankless, pointless task that is bound to fail… - Juliana Hatfield
