Jazz / Jazz Funk / Crossover Jazz / Bass

Digitally remastered edition of the Jazz bassist's 1974 album. Monk Montgomery is widely recognized as being perhaps the first electric bassist of any real significance to Jazz and introduced the Fender Precision Bass to the genre around 1951 however he is more famously seen playing the Fender Jazz Bass which would become his signature instrument alongside his use of a double bass. Monk Montgomery released a number of solo albums and in 1974 found himself signed to the legendary Philadelphia International Records where he released his fourth studio album, Reality. The album was produced by Bobby Martin who also lends his musical skills on the Fender Rhodes alongside Ron Kersey on guitar and Vince Montana on the vibraphone. Liner notes by Discussions Magazine's Stephen SPAZ Schnee.

Rhythm & Blues / Rock & Roll / Early R&B / Soul / Funk / New Orleans R&B

With five separate volumes, Ace Story is the most comprehensive portrait of the seminal New Orleans R&B record label. Over the course of the series, each of the label's hits are featured, including "Sea Cruise," "Rockin' Pneumonia," and "Pop Eye," among others, as well as many lesser-known gems. During the late '50s and early '60s, Ace's roster featured such R&B giants as Huey "Piano" Smith, Eddie Bo, Joe Tex, Lightnin' Hopkins, Charles Brown, Amos Milburn, and Earl King; each artist is featured on at least one disc of Ace Story, along with several acts that didn't have hits, but recorded some outstanding tracks. Start with the first volume, then proceed to the other discs; every one is filled with timeless R&B.

Merge continues its 20th anniversary festivities with a comp of non-label artists– Bright Eyes, Shins, New Pornos– covering songs from its catalog.
Merge Records doesn't look its age. Originally formed as an outlet for Superchunk material, the Durham, N.C.-based label has grown into an indie institution, but only gradually– year by year, release by release. It never allied itself with a scene or a sound, so the mind doesn't automatically tether it to a specific place or time, the way Sub Pop, despite its strong roster this decade, will be most closely associated with Seattle in the late 1980s and early 90s. So it's hard to believe Merge is already 20 years old, an occasion the label is marking with a big birthday bash– the five-day XX Merge fest in July– and a subscription-only series of commemorative retrospectives and remixes. Perhaps the most intriguing party favor is Score! Twenty Years of Merge Records: The Covers, a choppy but oddly endearing compilation that enlists 20 non-Merge acts to cover Merge songs.

The first and only comprehensive guide to modern record theory and its applications
Although it is often thought of as a special topic in order statistics, records form a unique area, independent of the study of sample extremes. Interest in records has increased steadily over the years since Chandler formulated the theory of records in 1952. Numerous applications of them have been developed in such far-flung fields as meteorology, sports analysis, hydrology, and stock market analysis, to name just a few. And the literature on the subject currently comprises papers and journal articles numbering in the hundreds. Which is why it is so nice to have this book devoted exclusively to this lively area of statistics.

Del Shannon’s formidable hit list qualifies him as one of the truly great artists of the 1960s. Del made #1 on both sides of the Atlantic with his first 45, ‘Runaway’, and for the next few years he delivered the chart goods again and again with some of the best singles ever made – most of which he wrote or co-wrote. This new Ace set is, we believe, the first to present Del’s UK 45s, as released between 1960 and 1966, in the order they appeared here and in the same couplings used on the original London and Stateside pressings (which often differed from their US counterparts).
