In layman’s terms, a crash is defined as two parties coming into contact with each other violently, without the implication of morality, emotion, or intent. On the album opener and tribute to the titular ‘90s R&B duo – ‘GrooveTheory’ – Kehlani doesn’t patiently set the scene. They conjure up a fiery collision of sound and plant themself into the track’s palpable, misty atmosphere. In the second leg of ‘GrooveTheory’, the track’s flame quickly disperses, and the singer culls together a salvo of sultry and psychedelic mantras pulled directly from the Kehlani playbook.

SweetSexySavage is the debut studio album by American R&B singer and songwriter Kehlani. The album was released on January 27, 2017 by Atlantic Records. Kehlani started work on the album shortly after the release of her mixtape You Should Be Here. Work proceeded into 2016 where she finished the album. Kehlani described the album of having three elements; Sweet, Sexy and Savage. Before Thanksgiving, Kehlani released the video to the single, "Distraction". The album received mainly positive reviews from critics, generating a Metacritic score of 71, which ranks as Kehlani's second highest score after her universally acclaimed mixtape You Should Be Here from 2015.

By anyone’s standards, Kehlani Parrish has experienced a pretty tumultuous rise to fame. She pulled off the not-inconsiderable feat of emerging from a TV talent show with her musical credibility intact. While still a teenager, her cover band PopLyfe reached the final of America’s Got Talent – on YouTube you can still see her belting out We Will Rock You for the edification of Piers Morgan – but when they failed to win, she quit the band, declined an offer from the show’s host Nick Cannon to join a rap group he was assembling and rescued herself from a life of penury by releasing her own mixtape.
