Aladdin Records, based in Los Angeles, was a very influential label in American music history. This is not the full story of Aladdin Records but it's a very good sampler of the label's output from 1947-1961. It's 50 tracks, 25 tracks on each of the 2CDs in the set, of very good R&B from the period. Each CD is about 60 minutes playing time. The sound is good for recordings of this era. An expanded form of the original album concept of covers of big-selling R&B chart toppers of earlier years, masterminded by Johnny Otis in 1956 and released on his Dig label. It features the cream of Los Angeles' best R&B vocalists, including Richard Berry, Jesse Belvin, Arthur Lee Maye, Mel Williams and Otis himself.

The exciting nightclub performances on this collection are not only being released for the first time, but every track is taken from the Research Collections of the Louis Armstrong House Museum, with the majority emanating from Armstrong's personal reel-to-reel tape collection.

Two CD collection. In 1948, the Empire Windrush famously docked at Tilbury, carrying 493 pengers from Jamaica and Trinidad (plus, by all accounts, one stowaway!). Pathe News were among the media gathered there to meet them, and a remarkable piece of newsreel footage survives in which the freshly disembarked King of Calypso, Lord Kitchener, serenades everyone with impromptu version of 'London Belongs to Me'. And although this by no means marked the birth of black music in the UK (it wasn't even the first boat-load of migrants from the West Indies - a smaller vessel, the Almazora, had delivered some 200 Jamaican pengers to Southampton six months earlier), the symbolic landing of the Windrush is very much seen as a rallying point for much of what would follow, socially, artistically and musically.
