Noted for her strong and textured voice, Elisabeth Kontomanou got her start as a jazz vocalist and composer in her native France. She had worked with the likes of Michel Legrand and toured internationally by the time she released her eponymous debut album in 1993. She spent the mid-'90s through the mid-2000s in New York City, a stretch that included 2004's Midnight Sun. Kontomanou made her Montreal International Jazz Festival debut in 2006, around the time she relocated to Stockholm. In 2009, Siren Song: Live at Arsenal was recorded with the Lorraine National Orchestra, and her tenth album, 2014's Amoureuse, was her first French-language set.

The Simple Life features the internationally renown rhythmist Leon Parker on 15 performances that bring his "vocal-body-rhythms" style (one that makes his voice and body his instrument) to the forefront of jazz. Merging the concept of music, dance, and theater, this is Parker's first release since 1998 and it combines performances recorded in unusual venues such as the streets of New York City, in a loft, live, and in the studio. Leon Parker's core group, vocalists Elizabeth Kontomanou and Ugonna Okegwo, are joined by several guest artists, including Steve Wilson and Sam Newsome on saxophones, Jacky Terrasson and Xavier Davis on piano, Tom Harrell on trumpet, and Adam Cruz taking over the percussion duties on "Ray of Light (Revisited)." Steve Wilson turns in a spectacular alto saxophone solo on "Belief," a live version recorded at the Village Vanguard.
André Ceccarelli has long been one of Europe's premiere jazz drummers and since the new century began he is getting additional opportunities to showcase his talent as a bandleader and composer/arranger as well. His band includes the brilliant pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, veteran bassist Hein Van De Geyn and the promising tenor saxophonist David El-Malek. Ceccarelli excels at driving a band and is equally at home in driving post-bop numbers like the pianist's "Five Plus Five," his own angular "Free Three" and his solo feature "1er Novembre." Van De Geyn contributed the haunting ballad "Though Dreamers Die," which features El-Malek's emotional solo. Vocalist Elisabeth Kontomanou is added for "Golden Land" (which she co-wrote with the leader, while it is also heard in instrumental form) and the standard "I'm Through with Love." This rewarding session will easily stand the test of time.
