Naxos’s Historical series continues at a dizzying rate. They are certainly to be applauded for re-issuing famous existing recordings at super budget price, as well as unearthing other treasures from the archives. The present release is particularly valuable, as it is, as far as I know, the first complete cycle of the Beethoven Violin Sonatas to be recorded. The fact that it features one of the most influential musicians of the early 20th Century makes it especially welcome.

Fritz Kreisler was in his early 50s during the two years covered by these recordings consolidating his status as the worlds most beloved violinist, touring Italy and elsewhere in Europe, as well as giving notable concerts in Carnegie Hall and throughout the US.

This 7th volume of Fritz Kreisler’s complete recordings takes us to the end of his acoustic sessions and to the first to use the new Victor electric system. Kreisler was exceptionally busy after the turmoil of WWI with a comeback in America, groundbreaking global tours, and a warm welcome back to England after being considered an ‘enemy alien’ during the war. At HMV he was joined by cellist Hugo Kreisler, whose fine singing legato adds a breath of Viennese style to the sound. At the introduction of microphone recording with its heightened realism and fidelity, Fritz Kreisler’s playing was still at its peak, also benefitting from his favourite 1733 Stradivarius in Victor’s New York studio.

We are indeed fortunate that Fritz Kreisler was still at the peak of his powers when electrical recording arrived in 1925. He was as busy as ever in the year covered by these recordings, using Vuillaume and Guarneri del Gesù violins that he said ‘breathe and pulsate with a million vibrations’. On one of his many successful charity concerts in 1927 The Times commented that Kreisler’s ‘fine-drawn phrases have the delicacy of a spider’s thread, the suppleness of elastic, and the strength of steel’. With wonderful examples of parlando bowing, many demonstrations of beautiful double-stopping, lovely staccato and myriad other subtleties such as delicate rhythmic changes, harmonics and variations in dynamics, these New York and Berlin sessions include classic versions of Kreisler’s best works and a rare unaccompanied movement by Bach.

The major news from this release by the Chamber Orchestra of New York under Salvatore Di Vittorio is the Respighi Concerto all'Antica for violin and orchestra, which here receives its world premiere. The work has an interesting history, presented here in a note co-authored by one Norberto Cordisco Respighi, perhaps the composer's nephew. Somewhat resembling the phony Baroque violin works of Fritz Kreisler stylistically, it was presented in 1909 by Respighi as a "Concerto in an Ancient Style by an Anonymous Composer, revised and orchestrated by Ottorino Respighi," who later fessed up to being the anonymous composer and said that he was having a bit of fun at the expense of German critics.

Turkish pianist Idil Biret is a fixture of the Naxos catalog and its completist enterprises, having recorded the collected piano works of Chopin and Brahms for the label. Between 1994 and 2008, she recorded a cycle of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas for her own IBA (Idil Biret Archives) label. She has appeared with most of the world's major orchestras and presented recitals in many countries, with a notable high point being a complete performance of Liszt's brutally difficult transcriptions of Beethoven's nine symphonies at the 1986 Montpellier Festival in France. Studio performances of those transcriptions were recorded for EMI and released on the IBA label. Biret was, in short, one of the world's top-rank pianists, not a star whose name was familiar even to casual listeners, but a versatile performer whose capabilities were well known to enthusiasts.

Rachmaninov was not only a brilliant pianist but also a composer, like Franz Liszt in an earlier century. They both demonstrated their talents in these areas by taking well known pieces by other composers and arranging them for concert performance on the piano. On this Naxos CD, Turkish pianist Idil Biret plays a dozen of these pieces that were worked on by Rachmaninov. One of the pieces is Liszt's own famous Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 in c sharp minor, with the addition of a cadenza by Rachmaninov.

The versatility of Catalan songs has seen them much in use in arrangements for violin and piano, with Fritz Kreisler and Joseph Szigeti enthusiastic champions of their virtuoso potential and melodic charm. In addition to arrangements, this programme has plenty of original works for violin including Gaspar Cassadó’s substantial Violin Sonata , Enrique Granados’s fulsome Romanza and Federico Mompou’s rhapsodic Altitud , with Jordi Cervelló’s sparkling ‘test piece’ Prova di violino bringing us well into the 21st century.
