Betty et Carole, deux femmes que tout sépare… Betty est une jeune écrivain de talent qui cultive un amour sans fin pour son jeune fils, Joseph, âgé de quatre ans. Quant à Carole, la vie ne lui a pas fait beaucoup de cadeaux et elle ne montre que peu d'intérêt pour son fils José. Rien ne prédisposait les deux femmes à se rencontrer si ce n'est la folie de Margot, la mère de Betty. Après une longue absence de plusieurs années, Margot, profitant de la disparition du petit Joseph, façonne un odieux stratagème afin de prouver l'amour qu'elle porte à sa fille…

(Having established herself as a successful writer in the United States, Betty Fisher returns to her native France with her four-year old son Joseph. She buys a house in a suburb of Paris and invites her mother, Margot, to stay with her, in an attempt to heal the scars of the past. Margot suffers from the medical condition porphyria which makes her prone to acts of violence and impairs her judgement. When Joseph dies tragically in an accident, Margot immediately goes out and finds another young boy to replace him. Initially shocked by her mother’s act, Betty soon becomes attached to the young boy and starts to think of him as her own son. Meanwhile, the police have started to investigate the disappearance of the missing boy, and suspect he has been murdered by the black lover of his real mother… )

Barnie aime sa femme, sa maîtresse et son amant. Son lieu de travail est à Londres, celui de résidence en France. Le jour de son anniversaire, il reçoit trois cadeaux identiques, chacun venant respectivement de ses trois amours: trois week-end en amoureux à Venise en Orient-Express, le premier mai. Pour préserver son mariage, il renvoie les deux billets à ses amoureux clandestins. Cependant, Barnie se trompe en les postant. Ainsi, Mark reçoit l'enveloppe destinée à Margot, et vice-versa. Les deux amants, mécontents se rendent au bureau de Barnie et font connaissance. Ensemble, Ils décident de rendre une petite visite à Barnie, en France, où ils rencontrent… sa femme!

(Barnie is a conventional businessman, with a home in Calais and a job in London. He has an adoring wife, a teenage daughter, a young mistress, Margot, and a gay lover, Mark. Barnie’s love life is complicated but he manages to keep it together, until the day he receives the same birthday present from Margot, Mark and his daughter – a trip to Venice on the Orient Express. Deciding to take his wife on the luxury train journey, he writes letters to Mark and Margot declining their offers, but these somehow get mixed up. Offended, Mark and Margot set out for Barnie’s house in France to tell a few home truths. They could not have chosen a worse time – Barnie is about to discover that his seemingly loyal wife Lucy has been having an affair with their daughter’s history teacher, Alexandre… )
