Lonely and shy bachelor Monsieur Hire (Michel Blanc), suspected in the murder of a girl, secretly watches his young, attractive neighbor Alice (Sandrine Bonnaire) through the window. Once, when lightning flashes during a thunderstorm, she notices his face in the window and comes to him to find out what he is after. Adapting Georges Simenon's novel, Patrice Leconte emphasized the psychological drama rather than the detective story and created a film about loneliness and voyeurism; his cold precision is reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock or Fritz Lang. The low-key acting and moody soundtrack add a lot, but it's the director who deserves the most accolades, as he manages, with only glances and gestures, to achieve a degree of eroticism that other films fail to reach even through explicit sex scenes.

The Crime of Monsieur Lange (1936)
A man and a woman arrive in a cafe-hotel near the belgian frontier. The customers recognize the man from the police's description. His name is Amedee Lange, he murdered Batala in Paris. His lady friend Valentine tells the whole story : Lange was an employee in Batala's little printing works. Batala was a real bastard, swindling every one, seducing female workers of Valentine's laundry... One day he fled to avoid facing his creditors, and the workers set up a cooperative to go on working. But the plot is less important that the description of the atmosphere just before the Popular Front.

En 1840, alors que le corps de Napoléon est rapatrié à Paris, un colonel anglais qui a connu l'empereur se remémore les dernières années passées à Sainte-Hélène. Au fil des souvenirs du jeune anglais, "Monsieur N." questionne les doutes et les mystères de l'histoire. Arrivé en effet en 1815, à l'âge de 46 ans, à Sainte-Hélène où le lieu dégage " comme une vapeur malsaine ; le ciel bas, couleur d'étain, oppresse l'île forteresse ", Napoléon n'est désormais plus l'empereur mais le général Bonaparte qui doit s'acclimater à une atmosphère oppressante. Bonaparte ne peut en effet rien faire librement. Il est prisonnier des Anglais et en particulier du gouverneur Hudson Lowe, qualifié par le souverain déchu d' "ignoble et funeste figure". Dès lors, comment Napoléon, l'homme de toutes les batailles, le fin stratège politique et militaire, peut-il accepter de se soumettre à cet emprisonnement ? Quel dispositif va-t-il tenter de mettre en œuvre pour desserrer l'emprise de ses geôliers ? C'est à Sainte-Hélène qu'il va livrer son ultime bataille qui façonnera l'image qu'il va laisser à la postérité.

From 1815, soon after his defeat at Waterloo, to his death in 1821, Napoleon lives out his exile on the island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic. Fearing that Bonaparte’s supporters may attempt a rescue, the island’s governor Hudson Lowe insists on having a large contingent of British soldiers. His aide-de-camp Basil Heathcote is instructed to keep a daily watch on the esteemed prisoner. What Heathcote glimpses are snatches of Napoleon’s romantic liaisons and hints of political intrigue. Years later, he is convinced that things were not quite what they seemed. Napoleon didn’t die on Saint Helena…
