The American daughter of missionaries Lana returns to Los Angeles from Palestine to work in a mission helping homeless people. Her unique relative is her unknown uncle Paul, a veteran of Vietnam War that cut relationships with his family and is bigot and paranoid. Paul lives in a surveillance van, lives as if he were a secret agent, sees conspiracy and terrorist cells everywhere, and has a great prejudice against Arabs and other non-American breeds after the September, 11th. They meet each other, and when they see the murder of a poor Pakistanis nearby the mission, they travel together to the small town of Trone to deliver his corpse to the family, where Paul sees a different reality. Adelaide, Belle, Felicie and Ludovic are young adult siblings who once lived in grandeur until their father's merchant ships were lost at sea. The family is now near ruin, but Adelaide and Felicie nonetheless still squander away the family money on themselves and keeping beautiful, whereas Belle slaves around the house, doting on her father. Ludovic detests his two spoiled sisters, but is protective of Belle, especially with his friend Avenant, a handsome scoundrel who wants to marry Belle. Crossing the forest one dark and stormy evening, the father gets lost and takes refuge in a fantastical castle. Upon leaving, he steals a blossom off a rose bush, which Belle requested. The castle's resident, an angry beast, sentences him to one of two options for the theft of the rose: his own death, or that of one of his daughters. As she feels she is the cause of her father's predicament (despite her sisters asking for far more lavish gifts)…

1913, Mexique. Pilleur de diligences aux méthodes expéditives, Juan Miranda fait la connaissance de John Mallory, membre de l'IRA spécialiste en dynamite, venu au Mexique pour échapper au gouvernement britannique. Aussitôt, Juan voit dans cet Irlandais taciturne et cynique le complice idéal pour braquer la banque de l'Etat. Mais cette dernière se révèle bien plus riche en prisonniers politiques qu'en lingots d'or. Juan et John se retrouvent alors plongés dans la tourmente de la révolution mexicaine, dont ils vont devenir les héros… malgré eux.

The setting is Mexico at the time of the Revolution. Juan Miranda (Rod Steiger), by all appearances a poor campesino, is picked up by a stagecoach carrying a group of the wealthy Mexican upper class. The stagecoach driver, thinking it a great joke, lets him ride with these elite snobs who immediately treat Juan as if he were an animal, talking about him as if he were too unintelligent to understand their cruel taunts. Soon they drive past a group of poor Mexicans, mostly children, and as the stagecoach slows to climb a steep hill the driver orders them to help push. Guns suddenly appear and drivers are killed. They are bandits and Juan Miranda is their leader (and for many, their father). They set about robbing the rich passengers of everything they own including most of their clothing. Although we are not shown, it is suggested that Juan rapes the female who was aboard the carriage. All are bundled into an abandoned cart, tied together, and set rolling down the hill where they land in a pile of mud.

Raúl Ruiz’s City of Pirates is (de)composed under the sign of Surrealism, with its trust in ecstasy, scandal, the call of the wild, mystification, prophetic dreams, humour, the uncanny. Given the surprising swerves and disorientations evoking Buñuel and Dalí, and the confidence in a poetic discourse recalling Eluard and Péret, one wonders if Ruiz didn’t elaborate his scenario using the Surrealist mode of automatic writing. Troubled, graceful Isidore – Ducasse and Duncan? – is a purely Surrealist heroine, part Ophelia, Salomé, Bérénice, prone to trances, somnambulism, hysterical seizure, contact with the ‘other side’.

Pour 800 dollars, Ben - ivre mort - remporte la mise et le mariage a lieu. Mais Elizabeth se refusera à son mari tant qu'il ne lui aura pas construit une maison en bois. Ben accepte le marché à contre-cœur (A Million Miles Away) et ramène des prostituées pour les autres hommes.

The film begins with a wagon crashing into a ravine. Prospector Ben Rumson finds that of the two adult male occupants, one is dead and his brother injured with a broken arm and leg. As the man is about to be buried, gold dust is discovered at the graveside. Ben stakes a claim on the land and the surviving brother is adopted as his "Pardner" while he recuperates. They then share the spoils of Ben's prospecting on the condition that Pardner takes care of Ben in his moments of drunkenness and melancholy. Pardner pines for a non-existent girl ("I Still See Elisa").
