1947 (1998). Bucking the tide while beginning to surf on a wave of increasingly mannered modernity, Stan Kenton's orchestra maintained its popularity during the post-WWII decline of the big bands. Volume four in the Classics Stan Kenton chronology presents all of his Capitol recordings made between January 2 and September 24, 1947. June Christy continued to be the featured vocalist, often backed by Kenton's newly formed vocal group, the Pastels. Dave Lambert was the director of this ensemble and sang with them on at least the first three tracks heard here. Noteworthy instrumentalists present in Kenton's 19-piece band during 1947 were drummer Shelly Manne, trombonists Kai Winding and Eddie Bert, as well as saxophonists Vido Musso, Boots Mussulli…

Having trimmed most of the synths and samples from 2015’s Hasta la Raíz, offbeat Mexican singer/songwriter Natalia Lafourcade gets truly intimate on the hushed and haunting Musas. Collaborating with Los Macorinos, a virtuoso guitar duo who spin impossibly gorgeous melodies throughout, Lafourcade once again blends dreamy indie pop (“Te Vi Pasar”) with swooning bossa nova (“Soledad y el Mar”). But she also strips her style down to the acoustic essentials, building many arrangements around her angelic voice and little else. Always charming, occasionally heartbreaking, Musas is another unexpected twist from a deceptively sweet and decidedly ambitious artist. Musas received a Latin Grammy Award nomination for Album of the Year at the 18th Annual Latin Grammy Awards.

The present album collects a representative cross section of Bach’s Latin church music that complements his extensive and rich repertoire of cantatas for the Sundays and feast days of the ecclesiastical year, works which Ton Koopman has already recorded with great success for Challenge Classics. It covers a broad chronological range from Bach’s time as cantor and music director in Leipzig, and includes the Magnificat from 1723, the Sanctus from 1724, the four Kyrie-Gloria Masses from the later 1730s, and the Christmas Gloria from the mid 1740s.
