The genius portraitist Maurice-Quentin de La Tour had no superior in painting the atmosphere of court and salons under the reign of Louis XV. Notably, he is to be thanked for the beautiful portrait of Jean-Joseph de Mondonville illustrating our album of the latter’s opera Titon et l’Aurore. We can hear harpsichord transcriptions of airs from Titon et l’Aurore in this beautifully clever program conceived by Olivier Baumont, designed around the legacy of de la Tour. It features a selection of "musical portraits", a genre much in fashion in the 1750s, by such composers as Balbastre, Rameau and Duphly.

The mystique of Paris's trendy Buddha-Bar exists largely due to its enthralling background music, as exemplified by the venue's highly successful series of compilations. The two discs of this fifth installment are filled with a diverse selection of artists from around the world. The first disc is a serene session that begins with the soft guitar, piano music, and female vocals of "Nie Kantshaietsa." Then Indian and Middle-Eastern elements and slow dance beats are introduced, guiding the listener further into audio bliss. By the second disc, the pace has picked up considerably, and there are ecstatic rhythms, wild electronic concoctions, and unusual instruments scattered throughout tracks such as "Just You & I" by dZihan & Kamien, "Egyptian Disco" by DJ Disse, and "Blue" by Latour. As always, this Buddha-Bar collection delivers a sensuous and exotic outing of international music.

What's new about playing old standards? Firstly, it is probably up to you the listener to judge. For me personally, I have reached a point in my career where it feels natural and challenging to play these great tunes that were played and recorded by some of the greatest jazz musicians of our time. Perhaps I have had too much respect for them throughout the years. Mostly, though, I have been focusing on playing and recording my own music until now. If I can express myself in the same way playing standards as I play my own music, then I am happy. I like to keep on learning from the great tradition and develop my own way of expression through that knowledge.

Anyone who has followed pianist and composer Lars Jansson with some degree of attention and reflection can hardly have missed noticing his ability to ignore the pressure of musical fashion and the more or less superficial dogmas of "renewal" to keep pace wit the times, and instead to create music that is immediate, singable, full of polished musical finesse and not, least, characterised by having its own unique expressions. In this process, he quite simply relies on his own constantly deepening perspectives regarding the cornerstones of music, filtered through his particular artistic temperament.

FLAC (tracks +booklet) | 01:16:06 | 410 Mb
Genre: Classical / Label: harmonia mundi

In her debut recording for harmonia mundi, Lucile Boulanger explores the facets of Antoine Forqueray’s career as a virtuoso instrumentalist: adept in a wide range of Italian repertoire and skilled at transcribing works originally intended for the violin, he could try it on for size, as it were, before settling on a different medium. With the viola da gamba, he extended the technique of playing it far beyond the norm, confronting the performer with fiendishly difficult challenges… which have been met brilliantly by the hugely talented foursome heard here.

This recording presents for the first time the complete works of the Forqueray family – music that is powerful, virtuosic, fascinating, that touches our innermost being – and combines harpsichord pieces with pieces for viola da gamba and basso continuo. It includes the four early pieces by Antoine Forqueray from the Recueil de pieces de violle avec la basse tiré des meilleurs autheurs, and our transcription for two harpsichords of the pieces for three viols found in the Lille Manuscript, as a nod to the family practice of the Forquerays (transcription was a very widespread practice at the time).

The flute and guitar duo is a particularly successful chamber music ensemble, even though the original repertoire for this formation is not limitless. It is, in fact, an almost ideal pairing, granting timbral variety thanks to the utter difference between the two instruments. They are also well matched as concerns dynamics, since none of them is among the loudest instruments of the Western tradition: a flute and guitar duo finds its perfect context in an intimate setting, such as a room where the audience coincides with the players, who perform for their own enjoyment, or a salon, where a restricted, selected audience will be able to appreciate all shades and nuances of their playing.
