Qui est Charlie Kholer, pianiste du bistrot de Plyne ? Il est triste, distrait, secret. Il a de drôles de frères, Chico, Momo et le petit Fido, qui ont des ennuis avec les truands. Un soir, Chico poursuivi, cherche refuge au bistrot près de Charlie. La serveuse Léna, amoureuse de Charlie sait qu'il se nomme Edouard Saroyan, qu'il été un grand virtuose célèbre et qu'il a tout abandonné après le suicide de sa femme. Léna veut aider Charlie, ils vont donner leur démission à Plyne, c'est là que les ennuis commencent…

Célèbre pour son sens de la poésie et sa virtuosité hors pairs, le pianiste américain Emanuel Ax interprètera une œuvre majeure de Richard Strauss, Burlesque pour piano et orchestre, une œuvre exigeante écrite par Strauss à tout juste 21 ans. Lorsque Strauss compose son poème symphonique Une vie de héros à la fin du XIXe siècle, il a 34 ans. Il y exprime tout son talent, avec assurance, puissance musicale et une touche de pathos. Aucune autre de ses œuvres ne dévoile autant d’égocentrisme et d’aplomb. Dans le cadre de cet hommage à Richard Strauss, Andrés Orozco-Estrada et le Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra se confrontent à ce monument du répertoire orchestral.

Charlie is a former classical pianist who has changed his name and now plays jazz in a grimy Paris bar. When Charlie's brothers, Richard and Chico, surface and ask for Charlie's help while on the run from gangsters they have scammed, he aids their escape. Soon Charlie and Lena, a waitress at the same bar, face trouble when the gangsters arrive, looking for his brothers.

In una chiesa sconsacrata si tiene una prova d'orchestra che non va bene. Il direttore strapazza gli orchestrali. Pausa. Quando il maestro torna in sala, è scoppiato il Sessantotto: urla, berci, slogan contro il potere e le istituzioni, scritte eversive finché un'enorme palla d'acciaio sfonda un muro tra polvere e detriti. Laceri e impauriti, gli orchestrali ricominciano la prova, guidati dal direttore che ora parla in tedesco. Apologo estetico? Parabola etica e civile? Allegoria politica sulla società italiana? Il filmetto (Fellini dixit) si prestò a queste e ad altre interpretazioni. Forse sarebbe meglio abbandonarsi al piacere del testo. Nastro d'argento alla musica (Nino Rota, alla memoria). Ispirò l'opera omonima di Giorgio Battistelli (prima mondiale a Strasburgo il 25.11.1995, prima italiana al Teatro dell'Opera di Roma nel marzo 2001).

Les murs d'un ancien monastère accueillent les répétitions d'un groupe d'orchestre. Une équipe technique de télévision est également présente et filme l'évènement. Mais tout ne se passe pas comme prévu…

(Orchestra Rehearsal (Italian: Prova d'orchestra) is a 1978 Italian film directed by Federico Fellini. It follows an Italian orchestra as the members go on strike against the conductor. The film was shown out of competition at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival. This was the last collaboration between composer Nino Rota and Fellini, due to Rota's death in 1979.)
