Jazz / Cool / Post Bop

Alone Together, Lee Konitz's first recording for Blue Note, is a special event. The saxophonist teamed up with legendary bassist Charlie Haden and young lion pianist Brad Mehldau, and the trio's interaction on this set of relaxed bop is astonishing. On paper, the music on Alone Together – a collection of standards – should just be straightahead cool bop, but all three musicians are restless and inventive, making even the simplest numbers on the disc vibrant, lively and adventurous. It's a wonderful record, one that makes a convincing argument that Konitz remains a vital force even as he reached his seventieth year.

An all-star quartet (pianist Martial Solal, altoist Lee Konitz, guitarist John Scofield and bassist Niels Pedersen) explores seven diverse Solal originals that range from chamberlike pieces to fairly free group improvising. The results are often exciting if cool in both tone and volume. Thoughtful yet unpredictable music.

It was on a Sunday, on September 19, 1993 to be exact, that Charlie Haden heard Brad Mehldau for the first time. Charlie and I were walking through the halls of the Hidden Valley Resort located in the Laurel Mountains in southwest Pennsylvania. The resort was sponsoring a jazz festival and Charlie had just finished an interview after which we needed to get back to the hotel room in order to prepare for Charlie’s sound-check and concert that night. As we hurried through the hall, one could hear, from behind the closed doors of the auditorium we passed, the sounds of a concert in progress.

Long Ago and Far Away captures pianist Brad Mehldau and bassist Charlie Haden in a live duo performance recorded during the 2007 Enjoy Jazz Festival in Mannheim, Germany. One can hardly think of a more compatible pairing, with both Mehldau and Haden embodying an introverted, harmonically rich, and endlessly inventive jazz paradigm.

After more than 30 concerts and many excellent reviews about their first trio albums "Tales From The Unexpected" and "European Trio", the Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi and the Dutch double bassist Jasper Somsen recorded their third trio album with the Catalan drummer Jorge Rossy: "Common View". Enrico Pieranunzi has long been one of the best-known and appreciated personalities on the European jazz scene. Pianist, composer, arranger, he has recorded more than seventy CDs under his own name, ranging from solo piano to trio, and from duet to quintet. He has played in concert and in the studio with Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Marc Johnson, Joey Baron, Paul Motian, Chris Potter and Charlie Haden, performing at all the most important international festivals, from Montreal to Copenhagen, from Berlin to Madrid.

The ever-surprising Jorge Rossy! The music world discovered him as the drummer in the pianist Brad Mehldau’s trio for a decade, and with whom he contributed to profoundly reinventing the “art of the trio” in one of the most important jazz groups of the time. Yet it was initially as a trumpeter that Jorge Rossy had been admitted as a student at the celebrated Berklee College of Music in Boston a few years earlier, and which had allowed him to join the elite ranks of world-class jazz musicians. Later, after leaving Brad Mehldau’s trio and back in his native Barcelona, the decision of the Catalan to devote himself to the piano instrument which he played in various groups and recorded several albums (including the first under his own name) surprised those who expected him to capitalize on the fame acquired playing drums with the pianist.
