Alí Arango, First Prize winner of the 2018 Tárrega International Guitar Competition, Benicàssim, has selected the repertoire for this recital in tribute to his years in Cuba where he learned many of these works. He has chosen Tárregas brilliant Gran jota, Barrios Mangorés masterpiece, La catedral and the powerful Sonata No. 1 by his fellow Cuban, the contemporary master Leo Brouwer with whose music Arango is strongly associated. Also included is the guitarists own Tríptico para guitarra, a large-scale work that embraces sarabande-like motifs, polyphony and Afro-Cuban influences.

Latin sonatas is a journey through the popular music of Brazil, Cuba and Puerto Rico, its rhythms, harmonies and colours, in a contemporary language breathing new life into the old form.

This is a dazzling technical performance by a very talented guitarist. He does take some liberties with the dynamics and timing, but the result is a distinctive interpretation. These are performances of notable energy and conviction.

The curiosity of the countertenor Andreas Scholl is well-known, with his taste for rare and precious musical items. We find him here with the lute player Edin Karamazov as the embodiment of an encounter between Havana and Leipzig, between contemporary Cuba and baroque Germany.

The rare recording of sublime Caribbean Concerto composed by Chappell (one of the most original and finest guitar concertos ever written in the 20th century), coupled with Arnold's very lyrical masterpiece and Brouwer's highly evocative works for guitar and orchestra, makes this CD a must-have for any serious classical guitar-file.

Leo Brouwer is universally acclaimed as an innovative composer, and this fifth volume of his complete guitar works contains some of his longest and most ambitious pieces. Danzas Rituales y Festivas Vol. 2 covers the gamut of virtuosic techniques and includes a movement dedicated to Pedro Mateo González, while Brouwer considers the Sonata del Pensador to be one of my most valuable pieces.
