Ile de Jersey, 1945. La Seconde Guerre mondiale est terminée, mais le mari de Grace n'est pas revenu du front. Dans un immense manoir isolé, la jeune femme élève désormais seule ses deux enfants selon les principes strictes de sa religion. Sa fille et son fils souffrent d'une étrange maladie : ils ne peuvent être exposés à la lumière directe du soleil. Lorsque trois nouveaux domestiques viennent habiter avec Grace et ses enfants, ils doivent se plier à une règle vitale : la maison doit être constamment plongée dans la pénombre, et aucune porte ne doit être ouverte avant que la précédente n'ait été fermée. Pourtant, l'ordre rigoureux instauré par Grace va être défié par des intrus…

A woman named Grace retires with her two children to a mansion on Jersey, towards the end of the Second World War, where she's waiting for her husband to come back from battle. The children have a disease which means they cannot be touched by direct sunlight without being hurt in some way. They will live alone there with oppressive, strange and almost religious rules, until she needs to hire a group of servants for them. Their arrival will accidentally begin to break the rules with unexpected consequences.
