Saxophone legend Lester Young, nicknamed "Prez", came to prominence as a member of Count Basie's orchestra, then becoming one of the most influential saxophonists of our time. In contrast to many of his hard-driving peers, Young played with a relaxed, cool tone and used sophisticated harmonies. On Jumpin' at the Savoy Ballroom, Young performs some of his favourite standards from the American Song Book. Audio Fidelity presents this legacy recording in stunning modern clarity with its remastering and digital transfer process.

Basically Young's Savoy Master Takes, Blue Lester finds the svelte tenor innovator on a prime mix of sides from 1944 and 1949. As was the trend of most swing soloists by the mid-'40s, Young heads up a few different extended combos here, featuring the likes of pianist Johnny Guarnieri, trumpeter Jesse Drakes, drummer Cozy Cole, and old Basie bandmates Freddie Green and the Count himself. The numbers with Basie are particularly good, especially "I Don't Stand a Ghost of Chance With You" and "Back Home in Indiana." And for the topper, Young is heard in the company of the entire Basie band (Clyde Hart is on piano, though) for the three tracks that close things out. Not a bad place to start your Lester Young collection.

2002's The Complete Savoy Recordings contains all 46 recordings Lester Young recorded for Savoy, including numerous alternate takes. This set is nicely assembled, boasting 20-Bit remastering, with good notes and logical sequencing (even if the successions of alternate takes do skew it a bit toward the historian, not the casual listener), making this the best set to date of Young's pivotal Savoy recordings. ~ AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

This Savoy compilation features previously unheard recordings by Lester "Pres" Young, one of the greatest tenor saxophonists in jazz history. All taken from sessions recorded in the 1940's, Pres is teamed up with many legends in their own right including trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison and the inimitable pianist/band leader Count Basie. This album features multiple takes (four versions of "Salute to Fats" for example) in a wide-ranging survey of Young's early to middle years. Standout tracks include "Ding Dong," an uptempo burner that highlights the fine drumming of Cozy Cole and "Blues 'N Bells," a medium bounce that highlights trombonist Jerry Elliot on a short but superb solo.

BLUE LESTER, a 15-track sampler of Lester Young's early recordings for Savoy, is an ideal introduction to the saxophone legend. Understated, lyrical, and possessed of a sly, nimble musical imagination, Young had a sinuous, laid-back sound with which he pioneered the idea of playing "cool" in jazz, launching–in effect–a stylistic revolution…

Exhaustive 30 CD collection from the Jazz legend's short-lived label. Contains 44 original albums (421 tracks) plus booklet. Every record-collector has run across an album with the little sax-playing bird in it's label-logo, right next to the brand name Charlie Parker Records or CP Parker Records. Turning the sleeve over, especially if it was one of the non-Parker releases, and seeing a '60s release date under the header Stereo-pact! Was as exciting an experience as it was confusing. Was the claim Bird Lives meant more literally than previously thought?

Ask a Stan Getz fan to describe his Lester Young-influenced tenor sax playing, and the sort of words that one typically hears include sublime, caressing, gentle, lyrical, and even ethereal. Words like tough, hard, and aggressive usually don't come to mind – that is, unless someone is describing his earliest recordings. In 1945 and 1946, Getz did in fact display a harder tone at times. But by the end of the '40s, he was the epitome of subtle, understated cool jazz. Spanning 1945-1949, The Complete Savoy Recordings takes a look at the saxman's early work and shows how much he evolved during the '40s.
