The only Beatles album to occasion negative, even hostile reviews, there are few other rock records as controversial as Let It Be. First off, several facts need to be explained: although released in May 1970, this was not their final album, but largely recorded in early 1969, way before Abbey Road. Phil Spector was enlisted in early 1970 to do some post-production work, but did not work with the band as a unit, as George Martin and Glyn Johns had on the sessions themselves; Spector's work was limited to mixing and some overdubs…

The debut album from the former track star generated two Billboard R&B singles. "(You're A) Good Girl" is a mid-tempo number that employs a danceable rhythm and enchanced with icy background vocals and scintillating guitar rhythms. It crested at #22 on the charts. With added studio gimmickry and vocal antics, "Who Do You Think You Are," also a dance cut, peaked at #68 on the charts. The Brooklyn native lays down his own rendition of the Temptations classic "Just My Imagination." Thomas injects his own lyric throughout several parts of the song without forfeting the song's natural beauty. While he does not have explosive vocals, Lillo Thomas does possess vocal savvy and an uniqueness to his style to deliver a excellent album.

Cissy Houston, Myrna Smith, Sylvia Shemwell, and Estelle Brown had deep separate and shared histories when they became the Sweet Inspirations in 1967. That April, hot off backing Aretha Franklin and Van Morrison at the studio dates that yielded "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" and "Brown Eyed Girl," the singers recorded their first session as headliners for Atlantic. The group left Atlantic Recording Studios with ardent interpretations of contemporary material that, depending on the source, either reaffirmed its gospel foundation or took it to church, but none of the resulting songs – all eventual A-sides – truly shook up the charts. This would typify the Sweet Inspirations' four years with the label. Perhaps the women were underserved. Only two of their nine charting singles were written for them, and the one that did best, "Sweet Inspiration" – their lone Top 20 pop and Top Ten soul hit – was dashed off by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham after the songwriting duo watched them attempt to spin gold from straw in the studio. Unfulfilled commercial promise notwithstanding, the group during these years – with Ann Williams replacing Houston in 1969, then leaving her partners a trio the next year – produced a high volume of powerful R&B and gospel.

Nina Simone's live performances have a power and an intimacy all their own, and those qualities stand out in this recording from Vine Street. It's a stunning form of cabaret singing, dramatic without melodrama, and with roots that reach to Billie Holiday's surprising success with "Strange Fruit." Simone can add profundity to a usually carefree song like "My Baby Just Cares for Me," and the range of the performance broadens with the startling "Be My Husband," a simple pattern reduced to the naked force of a field holler, and the stark hymn "Balm in Gilead." Carefully chosen songs from Randy Newman, Bob Dylan, and Janis Ian achieve new dimensions in Simone's treatments. Her own deeply felt "Four Women" and "Mississippi Goddam" are potent and enduring protests. There's some effectively spare accompaniment from guitar, bass, and drums, but Simone's piano is the essential instrumental voice, from slow barrelhouse to Bach.

Connie Evingson isn't the first person to provide a vocal jazz tribute to the Beatles; over the years, everyone from Sarah Vaughan to Czech singer Peter Lipa has interpreted the John Lennon/Paul McCartney songbook. But Let It Be Jazz, the Minneapolis resident's fifth album, is among the more creatively successful..

One of Philadelphia International's most successful artists through the the '70s. His 1977 LP Unmistakably Lou won him a third Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and contained the R&B Top Ten hit "See You When I Git There"; later that year, he continued his artistic and commercial hot streak with When You Hear Lou, You've Heard It All and "Lady Love." The title track of 1979's Let Me Be Good to You was his last big hit with Philly International, reaching number 11 R&B. The following year, Rawls kicked off what would become a consuming passion for years to come: the Lou Rawls Parade of Stars Telethon, an annual event which eventually raised millions of dollars for the United Negro College Fund.

The Beatles' song catalog is one of the best-known and revered bodies of work in the whole of modern music, and the depth, variety, and timelessness of the songs this once-in-a-lifetime band produced make that catalog both a marvel and a treasure. Everyone knows these songs, and everyone knows them in the original Beatles versions. Those versions are there, shining in stone, and even when they show up in remixes like in the recent LOVE mashup, the original recordings echo unshakably in the mind. Roberta Flack knows this.

Julian Argüelles, the saxophonist and composer who emerged on the Loose Tubes wave in the 1980s, now has an international reputation for both his playing and his powerful writing, but this tribute to South Africa’s world-jazz impact highlights his gifts as an arranger. Argüelles appears here with his drummer brother Steve, and with pianist Django Bates – all of them having worked with late lamented South African exiles including Chris McGregor and Dudu Pukwana. Those influences course through this effervescent set, on which the Argüelles siblings, Bates, and the soloists of the punchy Frankfurt Radio Bigband bring some timelessly thrilling music back to life. Pukwana’s pounding classic Mra Khali gets a pin-sharp ensemble treatment that doesn’t cramp its old joyousness; Miriam Makeba’s swaying Retreat Song gets imaginatively talkative muted-trombone variations from Peter Fell and a swerving accordion-like keys break from Bates; the arrangement of Abdullah Ibrahim’s The Wedding hides the melody in a slow rapture; and the band’s hard-hit riffing on Pukwana’s gleeful Come Again makes you jump gratefully out of your skin. It’s a delightful album.
