Promotion for the first two iterations of the Bad Boys movie series, 1995’s Bad Boys and 2003’s Bad Boys II, were were bolstered in each instance by an era-defining jam. For Bad Boys, it was the crossover dancehall hit “Shy Guy” by Diana King. Bad Boys II had Diddy, Nelly, and Murphy Lee’s beach-party-ready rap anthem “Shake Ya Tailfeather.” If the initial marketing efforts for Bad Boys for Life were slow to pair the film with any one song, it might be because the breadth of genres across the soundtrack lends itself to the sounds of Miami, the franchise’s location playing nearly as big a role as Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

All This and World War II is a 1976 musical documentary that juxtaposes Beatles songs, performed by a number of musicians, with World War II newsreel footage and 20th Century Fox films from the 1940s. It lasted two weeks in cinemas and was quickly sent into storage. The original intention of the filmmakers was to use actual Beatles music in the film. The decision to use other artists covering Beatles music was made by the film's producers after they realised additional money could be made through a soundtrack album. The decision was a sound one, as the soundtrack actually generated more revenue than the film. The album reached number 23 on the UK album charts, with a total of seven weeks on the chart. Elton John’s rendition of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" was previously released as a single in 1974 and had been a number one hit. Rod Stewart’s version of "Get Back" was subsequently released and became a UK hit single. Ambrosia’s cover version of "Magical Mystery Tour" was released and became a US hit single reaching #39 on the Billboard Charts. The Bee Gees, who contributed three songs, would go on to star in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, another film that exclusively used Beatles songs.

Starring Irene Jacob as Veronique and Weronika, Kieslowski's La Double Vie de Veronique explores the subject of human fragility through a highly imaginative dual narrative, addressing the possibility that we each have a spiritual twin. Preisner's score contains some of his most well-known themes, particularly "Van den Budenmayer Concerto in E minor" and "Les Marionnettes".

Life is a science fiction horror film directed by Daniel Espinosa which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and Ryan Reynolds. The film follows a crew aboard the International Space Station as they study a sample of organic matter brought by a space probe returning from Mars. Their studies verify the sample is the first proof of extraterrestrial life, but the experiments backfire as the organism gains intelligence and begins growing rapidly. Trapped aboard the ISS, the crew must find out how to kill the being before it escapes to Earth. The original soundtrack to Life was composed by director Espinosa’s frequent collaborator Jon Ekstrand (Easy Money, Child 44). Ekstrand has crafted a score which sets an ominous mood for the film which builds expertly before giving way to the sheer terror of being pursued in an isolated otherworldly environment. This release is not to be missed.

Like its parent film, T2 Trainspotting’s soundtrack eschews cosy Cool Britannia nostalgia for something weirder and better. The original soundtrack was a sharp mix of cult classics and of-the-moment artists. Rather than get Blur and co back, Danny Boyle has called on a more leftfield lineup of young guns, the likes of Mercury-winning Edinburgh alt hip-hop trio Young Fathers, Brixton scuzz rockers Fat White Family and deliciously demented Irish rappers Rubberbandits. The classic side of things is held up by Queen, Run DMC, Blondie and more, with the whole bookended by Trainspotting’s biggest tracks reborn: a mad-dog Prodigy remix of Iggy’s Lust for Life and Underworld’s Slow Slippy. In our retromaniac world, it might not attain the original’s classic status, but it’s all the better for its bravery. (The Guardian)
