Limbo

IN LIMBO (FR, 2015, 85') is a documentary essay that questions the world of memory that we are all building, through the everyday digitization of our lives and our environment. IN LIMBO 1. Lit. On the border of hell. 2. Fig. In a state of neglect, of oblivion 3. In computing: the condition of files which are deleted from view but not yet physically removed from storage. Our data accompanies us all of our lives, like our shadows and our footprints. By the time we all disappear, they will haunt the memory of a huge network still in activity. The voice of a mysterious spirit (embodied by Nancy Huston) wakes up in the maze of data centers which makes up the global network. As though there were nothing left on Earth but this huge machine, still running. Diving into her memory, she is fascinated by the strange life that lies within, inhabited by ghostly characters (the Internet's founding fathers, Google CEOs, digital librarians, etc). Enchanted by the promises of this world, she abandons herself into it. Pure soul, she wanders through this after-life, attempting to once more experience the essence of nostalgia. IN LIMBO is the journey of this spirit into a world without forgetting, fed by all the machines, the data centers and the individuals connected to the internet. It is a sensorial and poetic drift into a new, strange and ghostly global organism we already all live in: are we building the biggest cemetery of your History, or are we building a new kind of cathedral?

The thorny issue of direct provision one of Irish societys most pressing and difficult problems to address is usually spoken about in general terms. Which is understandable: its a big thing, there are a lot of aspects to it, and policy usually must be made on the basis of generalities, not specific. Unfortunately, we can forget that behind the stats are countless individual stories. Leaving Limbo, a documentary which aired last night on RT One, made a sterling effort to redress that imbalance by telling the stories of two of those individuals.

Limbo tells the story of people trying to reinvent themselves in the Southeastern islands of Alaska. The story revolves around Joe Gastineau, a fisherman traumatised by an accident at sea years before, singer Donna de Angelo and her disaffected daughter Noelle who come into Joe's life. When Joe's fast-talking half-brother Bobby returns to town and asks Joe for a favor, the lives of the characters are changed forever.

Limbo is a secluded colony of child-vampires who are anything between 4 and 120 years old, all having all been victims of 'shameless' adult vampires. They are led by a formidable and deeply religious old ex-nurse whose destiny in life is to find these 'lost souls', and bring them of age in her colony. Through teaching, religious rituals adapted from the Catholic faith, and the occasional visit to local towns for blood, she is preparing them for what God had in mind for them: the replacement old the common and 'deeply sinful' human, and the creation a new race of men through 'natural cloning', or in more lay terms, their infection by her children. But they are not the only such colony in the world, nor are they as 'secluded' from outside threats as they think.
