Franz Liszt was born in Raiding, Hungary, and gypsy music fascinated him from childhood. After studies, concert tours and romantic adventures abroad, Liszt returned to his native country in 1839 and was hailed as a champion of its national identity. This program presents Liszt’s original Hungarian Rhapsodies from the Magyar Dalok collection, introducing themes used in later volumes. The inspiration he found in gypsy music-making created virtuoso piano works that assimilate its melancholy drama and wild dances, imitating local rhythms and colorful instruments such as the cimbalom, and elaborating on melodies of the day in a refined and spectacular act of national storytelling.

Music analysts refer to Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) as the “third B”, after Bach and Beethoven. Although music history frequently labels him as the last German Romantic of the 19th century, his style and his attitude to art need to be understood somewhat more broadly.

A debut on CD for the American Decca legacy of Ruth Slenczynska, a prodigious Romantic-age keyboard lioness. The biography for her Wigmore Hall recital in March 1957 claimed that the 32-year-old Ruth Slenczynska had given 1600 concerts. Scarcely believably, perhaps, but no less so than other elements of her extraordinary life story - making her public debut at the age of four, under the instruction of a tyrannical and abusive father, playing a Mozart concerto at the Salle Pleyel in Paris just three years later, attracting the admiration and tutelage of Cortot and Rachmaninov, apparently burnt out before adulthood.

Later, he enrolled at the Paris Conservatory, where his piano professors were Aline van Barentzen and Monique de la Bruchollerie, and he received instruction in chamber music from René Leroy and Jean Hubeau. He made his debut in Paris in 1966, with the Orchestre Symphonique d'Ile-de-France and conductor René-Pierre Chouteau. Katsaris excelled at the conservatory, and he earned first prizes for piano in 1969 and chamber music in 1970.

Phillips' Great Pianists of the 20th Century issue has gotten a lot of publicity in the ten or so years since it has been released. In a musical niche suffering from falling revenues, it was a decent seller. But it left many connoisseurs disappointed, as the quality was limited to the fancy packaging.
