With the release of this live recording of Hector Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, RCO Live celebrates the start of its collaboration with Daniele Gatti as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's seventh chief conductor on 9 September 2016. His unconventional take on this spectacular score evokes the astonishment audiences must have experienced at the time of the 1830 premiere. It is exactly this sense of surprise and freshness - founded on a thorough knowledge of the score - and the sheer joy of making music together that prompted the members of the RCO to choose Daniele Gatti as their new chief conductor.

Liszt is the only great composer of the nineteenth century who still suffers from detractors, and this despite the acknowledged debt of almost every composer who was his younger contemporary or successor. The trouble started whilst he was alive, of course, when many people simply couldn’t cope with his fame and popularity. He was never penurious; the starving artist in the garret was someone whom he helped, but someone he never was. In short, he made money, lots of it. He lost track of most of it, and gave away virtually all of it. He never owned property, nor even a coach and horses. He did own pianos, an excellent library, both musical and literary, and he enjoyed the freedom of every court in Europe.

Franz Liszt (1811-86) is rightfully credited as one of the great pianists of the 19th century, but he is equally well known as the inventor of the single-movement symphonic poem. These poems are large- scale pieces bearing not only titles, but also extra-musical associations consisting of actual stories and emotional impressions. Liszt was not interested in music that made "sense" on its own terms; he liked the additional dimensions offered by an evocative, artistic programme. Les Preludes is the most frequently performed of these works, in which a heroic, sublime score accompanies the alternately warlike and pastoral passages of a Lamartine poem.

Many still think of Franz Liszt as that pianist with long hair who wrote and played effective and brilliant piano works, and who was apparently a great lover and, strangely, a monk as well. In reality, Liszt was a many faceted man of great cultivation and sensitivity whose enormous musical output was more or less ignored for decades, but nowadays more and more works are getting long needed examination and consideration.

At one point back in the days of LPs it seemed that conductor Bernard Haitink was waging an Ormandy-like campaign to record all of the Western orchestral literature for Philips. Moreover, for many listeners this was a welcome pursuit because Haitink was so good at so many things; his 1973 recording of Stravinsky's Le Sacre du printemps is still considered one of the most superlative readings of the work, even though Haitink's catalog ultimately grew to the extent that it became difficult to single out what was best within it.

To celebrate the 200th birthday of this master pianist and composer, this 6-CD set contains a diverse collection of the 100 best-loved masterpieces of Franz Liszt. The first CD begins with complete performances of Liszt's two piano concertos, both firmly established as staples of the concerto repertoire. They are followed by extracts from a number of Liszt's other works for piano and orchestra including Fantasy on Hungarian Folk Themes and Malédiction. The next three CDs cover Liszt's huge output of works for solo piano, from miniatures like `La campanella' (`The little bell') using a melody by Paganini and `Un sospiro' (`A sigh'), to the massive Sonata in B minor that was used so poignantly by Sir Frederic Ashton in his memorable ballet Marguerite and Armand created for Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev…
