Loeb

This expanded version of the 1997 European Mathematical Society Lectures given by the author in Helsinki, begins with a self-contained introduction to nonstandard analysis (NSA) and the construction of Loeb Measures, which are rich measures discovered in 1975 by Peter Loeb, using techniques from NSA. Subsequent chapters sketch a range of recent applications of Loeb measures due to the author and his collaborators, in such diverse fields as (stochastic) fluid mechanics, stochastic calculus of variations ("Malliavin" calculus) and the mathematical finance theory. The exposition is designed for a general audience, and no previous knowledge of either NSA or the various fields of applications is assumed.

Non siamo soli nello spazio. Avi Loeb, uno dei più noti astronomi a livello internazionale e docente alla Harvard University, ne è certo. La prova risalirebbe all'ottobre 2017, quando i telescopi sull'isola di Maui intercettarono un punto luminoso che sfrecciava rapido nel cielo. Si trattava del primo oggetto interstellare mai individuato nel nostro sistema solare, battezzato con il nome di 'Oumuamua. Alla luce dei dati raccolti in undici giorni di osservazione, gli scienziati si aggrapparono alla teoria che 'Oumuamua fosse una cometa piuttosto anomala, dato che aveva una forma stravagante, era troppo brillante, viaggiava a velocità sostenuta lungo una traiettoria inusuale e non lasciava detriti al suo passaggio. Secondo l'approccio tanto visionario quanto rigoroso di Loeb, l'ipotesi migliore è invece molto più semplice: 'Oumuamua non era un fenomeno naturale. Im Februar 1917 litt James Loeb unter der bis dahin schwersten manischen Episode seiner Bipolarstörung. Über die Behandlung durch Emil Kraepelin und den Verlauf wurden Krankenberichte angefertigt, die von Antonia von Hirsch kritisch analysiert werden. Dieses einmalige Dokument der „Krankheitsberichte des Herrn J. Loeb“ spiegelt die lege-artis-Behandlung eines hochmanischen Patienten in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jhd. wider. Zudem kann die Autorin anhand dessen und in Zusammenhang mit anderen Textdokumenten erstmals eine Diagnose für James Loeb stellen, dessen eigene Leiderfahrung Anlass zur Stiftung des Forschungsinstituts für Psychiatrie war.
