Lohengrin, WWV 75, is a Romantic opera in three acts composed and written by Richard Wagner, first performed in 1850. The story of the eponymous character is taken from medieval German romance, notably the Parzival of Wolfram von Eschenbach, and its sequel Lohengrin, itself inspired by the epic of Garin le Loherain. It is part of the Knight of the Swan legend.

One of the great unsung conductors of the middle twentieth century, Rudolf Kempe enjoyed a strong reputation in England but never quite achieved the international acclaim that he might have had with more aggressive management, promotion, and recording. Not well enough known to be a celebrity but too widely respected to count as a cult figure, Kempe is perhaps best remembered as a connoisseur's conductor, one valued for his strong creative temperament rather than for any personal mystique. He studied oboe as a child, performed with the Dortmund Opera, and, in 1929, barely out of his teens, he became first oboist of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.

After the enormous success of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's 2013 production of Wagner' sDer fliegende Hollander (RCO Live 14004) a follow-up was inevitable. With the eminent Wagnerian Mark Elder leading the RCO and a cast of internationally acclaimed soloists the production of Lohengrin in December, 2016 was a complete triumph. The beginning of another RCO tradition? ""…Vogt's interpretation was truly superior. Elder…knew how to draw magic from the orchestra."" (Peter van der Lint, Trouw). ""A treat of glorious music on highest level…phenomenal achievements of all…Highlight of the season."" (Erik Voermans, Het Parool).

Beczala’s Lohengrin was deemed “nothing short of spine tingling” by Opera News and ON hailed Netrebko’s performance in her first Wagnerian role as “utterly at home in Wagner’s Romantic universe.”

There was no instant click between Richard Wagner and his future opera hero Lohengrin. Having come across the Lohengrin poem amongst the medieval source material for his opera Tannhäuser, he then laid it aside, considering it to be too mystical. But the figure of Lohengrin would not let him go, and he gradually came to see in the mysterious Grail Knight the very essence of a ‘deeply human longing for unconditional love’. Finally, at the spa town of Marienbad during the summer holiday of 1845, inspiration struck: ‘Lohengrin… stood suddenly revealed before me in full armour at the centre of a comprehensive dramatic adaptation of the whole material.’ In no time at all, he had put down on paper a prose sketch of a libretto. …

Richard Jones's radical new production of Lohengrin was the talk of the 2009 Munich Festival. It was also a triumph for Jonas Kaufmann in the title role. Die Welt added that they "could not think of any cast more perfectly matched, so youthfully enthralling, in short: so wonderful … ". With striking costumes and designs by Ultz - and directed by Maestro Kent Nagano - it represents a bold new Lohengrin for today's world.

Hans Neuenfelss striking new production of Wagners fairytale opera gives this medieval story of doomed love and sorcery the Bayreuth treatment. As controversial as it is stimulating, this production was the talk of the 2011 Festival, and showcases a new generation of Wagnerian singing talent including soprano Annette Dasch and tenor Klaus Florian Vogt. Lohengrin is staged by the enfant terrible Hans Neuenfels, and offers a thought provoking production of brilliant visual clarity. The performance by Klaus Florian Vogt in the title role is staggering and impressive. There is beauty and purity in his voice, but in this role in particular, one truly senses something unheimlich, other-worldly, which fits superlatively both with work and production. Conductor Andris Nelsons brings out the best in the festival chorus and orchestra. It is a Lohengrin one does not easily forget and puts Bayreuth back in the vanguard of Wagner interpretation.

"PentaTone have definitely established a winning formula for success with the ten Wagner operas they are currently recording in association with Deutschlandradio Kultur in Berlin. (…) The presentation of this set is excellent. Thankfully, it includes a well translated German/ English libretto (unlike the travesty supplied with the Bychkov version), a thought provoking essay on the opera by Steffen Georgi and full artist biographies. Though my own allegiance to the Bychkov version among recent recordings remains steadfast this Janowski account is unlikely to disappoint. It will surely be welcomed by avid Wagnerites and makes one eager for the next issue in what is proving to be a superlative series." ~sa-cd.net

Lohengrin and Ragtimes is the latest recording from the Royal Swedish Cavalry Band, Sweden’s only mounted military band. Under the direction of Director of Music, David Björkman, the band performs music by composers from three different centuries, among them Henze, Wagner and Wolff. The royal sound of the trumpet as well as the musical mix of humour and dignity are characteristics of the Royal Swedish Cavalry Band. In this recording we find music for dance, a sorrow march and operatic music accompanied by contemporary experimental music.
