The debut album by Austin-based blues-rock singer Lou Ann Barton didn't sound like many major-label releases of 1982. Produced by Atlantic Records veteran Jerry Wexler (with, worryingly, some help from ex-Eagles schlockmeister Glenn Frey) and recorded at the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, Old Enough is a solid piece of soulful Texas-style blues-rock. Barton reveals herself to be an exceptional singer, sassy and sly but with a welcome tendency toward restraint.

Although she doesn't tour nearly as much as she probably could, Austin-based vocalist Lou Ann Barton is one of the finest purveyors of raw, unadulterated roadhouse blues from the female gender that you'll ever hear. Like Delbert McClinton, she can belt out a lyric so that she can be heard over a two-guitar band with horns.

Just as she herself was influenced by the legacy of such Blues Singers as Bessie Smith and Big Mama Thornton, Janis Joplin's music continues to reach out to new generations of Rock and Blues fans. On this heartfelt tribute set, Joplin contemporaries Tracy Nelson and Taj Mahal, youngbloods Lou Ann Barton and Friend 'n Fellow, R&B originals Etta James, Otis Clay and Lonnie Brooks (plus many other artists), combine to deliver a gritty, impassioned testament to one of the most powerful blues voices to come out in the 1960s West Coast Rock scene.
