Ambitious reed quintet Splinter Reeds presents a bracing program of new works written for the group by composers Sky Macklay, Matthew Shlomowitz, Caro Haxo, Eric Wubbels, Theresa Wong, and Yannis Kyriakides. All of the works display an envelope pushing impulse that stretches the boundaries of this traditional instrumental format, carving out new repertoire and provoking new aesthetic perspectives.
Features 24 bit remastering and comes with a mini-description. A really unique little chapter in the career of Shorty Rogers – and a near-lost record that's one of his best from the 60s! As you might guess from the title, the set was recorded as a sort of "stereo dynamics" album – post-bachelor pad, but in a mode that was very concerned with the overall sound qualities as much as the actual music. But the setting turned out to be a really great thing for Shorty, as it encouraged him to open up with his arrangements, and push the group into territory that you wouldn't hear on his 50s albums!
This is a comprehensive collection with countless pivotal sessions. It features 203 separate recordings on seven CDs and collects both the sessions led by Chu Berry and other sessions where he contributed significantly as a sideman. You can study his remarkable surefootedness as a soloist; remember an era where evolution in the music was running rampant and Chu Berry's tenor saxophone was one of the things making it run.
Calling the Holy Modal Rounders 'legendary' is an understatment. Peter Stampel, Steve Weber and company were the original 'acid folk rock' band. This 1971 previously unreleased live radio broadcast, captures these wild and wacky visionaries at their peak - including their 2 biggest 'hits' - If You Want to be a Bird (featured in the Easy Rider movie & soundtrack) and Boobs A Lot (not politically correct, but still very funny). There's also a song by former Rounder and legendary playwright Sam Shepard and a Johnny Otis tune thrown in for good measure as well. This expanded seven piece version of The Rounders cover rock, latin, swing and everything in between during this nearly hour long show - all through a good time, beatnik haze.
