Although Alberta Hunter, who had briefly come out of retirement, gets first billing on this CD reissue, in reality she shares the spotlight with two other veterans of the 1920s: Lucille Hegamin and Victoria Spivey. Each of the singers is featured on four songs apiece while backed by such top players as clarinetist Buster Bailey, trombonist J.C. Higginbottham, and Cliff Jackson or Willie "The Lion" Smith on piano. Hunter is in superior form on such numbers as "You Gotta Reap Just What You Sow" and "I Got a Mind to Ramble," although she would soon be out of music for another 15 years, continuing her work as a nurse. Hegamin (who had not recorded since 1932) was having a brief last hurrah, despite sounding good, and Spivey, reviving her "Black Snake Blues," would soon be launching her own Spivey label. This is a historic and enjoyable set recommended to both classic jazz and blues collectors.

The “Hypnotic Pandemonium” of Lucille Furs has been alternately described as “poetic rhythm,” “sophisticated and mellow” and “dream beat-pop”. The group describes themselves simply as “baroque pop.” The Music Manual UK describes them as “one of the hottest offerings to come out of Chicago.”

It's what happens when you roll Beale Street, Muscle Shoals and 123rd & Lennox into a magical musical hydra, and it's what Sister Lucille have created on their debut album, Alive. The band's roots run wide and deep. From lead singer Kimberly Dill's Opry debut at the Ryman Auditorium as a teenager, opening for the legendary Kitty Wells, to the band's Beale Street debut in 2014, the Springfield, MO foursome breathes funk in to the Blues, stirs it with the soul of Gospel and tints it with an air of Country to forge a sound that's distinctly American but universal in its appeal. Dill and Jamie Holdren (guitar/vocals) are both second-generation musicians, and their collective musical DNA is the fuel for Sister Lucille's fire.

So much music seems to be informed by the surroundings from which it came, like rock chiselled by the relentless weather it finds itself stuck within. However, unlike rocks, not all musicians are stationary, and so certain artists tend to conjure their songs from elsewhere, selecting small pieces from the places they pass through, or perhaps have never even been to, bringing them all together to make something illusory, far less determined by time and place. Julia Lucille appears to be one such songwriter. There are certainly glimpses of the Texas she currently calls home; the soft country lilt that fades in and out of focus at varying points across her new record, but there’s something else here too, something more vague, less determined by physical and familial roots.

Jeff Simmons (electric bass/piano/organ/accordion/vocals) - erstwhile member of the Indian Puddin' & Pipe, West Coast Natural Gas, Easy Chair, and Ethiopia - issued a pair of solo long-players on Frank Zappa's short-lived Straight Records imprint. First was the primarily instrumental Naked Angels original soundtrack (1969), followed several months later by this LP. Joining Simmons are Craig Tarwater (guitar), Ian Underwood (sax), and Ron Woods (drums/percussion) with Zappa (lead guitar) and John Kehlior (drums) collectively guesting on the exceedingly bluesy selections "Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up" and "Raye." Apart from the Zappa connection, the effort showcases Simmons' considerable talents as a composer and performer…

This is a brand new album of present-past psych-pop music.
My friend, Kilda Defnut, says that Methuselah could have loved this record during his rebellious teen years, which theoretically, could have lasted for a hundred years or more.
Now, I am no Biblical scholar, but I carbon date the sound of this one to about 1965-68, give or take a radioactive isotope or two. But, to be specific, Chicago’s Lucille Furs are a new band that breathes fresh life into the very vintage sound of psych rock and Baroque pop. And they are good! They are good like The Pretty Things’ S.F. Sorrow, The Electric Prunes, Blossom Toes’ We Were Ever So Clean, The Kinks’ “Well Respected Man” and “Plastic Man,” and (holy cow!) The Beatles as they turned from “Help” to “I’m Only Sleeping.”
