When we start reading the 'Inferno', in fact, we are led to expect that there will be not nine circles but seven, corresponding to the Seven Deadly Sins. Indeed, after the liminal circles of the neither-bad-nor-good and the Virtuous Pagans, the Circles of Incontinence follow precisely the order of sins which Dante does use in the 'Purgatorio': Lust, Gluttony, Avarice and then (with the possible addition of Sloth, which some critics see as a sort of sub-section of Wrath in Hell) Wrath.
