Lynyrd Skynyrd is definitely the southern rock band, mixing the saturated power of blues-rock with a rebellious southern image and hard rock arrogance. Skynyrd never relied on the jazzy improvisations of members of the Allman Brothers. They were more of a sharp, demanding rock & roll band – they could have done endless bullshit on stage and had that down-to-earth honesty more typical of country – but their music remains firmly rooted in blues, rock, and the deep south. The members of Skynyrd split up following a plane crash that killed lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and two other members, but they reunited ten years later, going on a string of popular tours.

TRIPLE CD SET FEATURING THE FINEST BROADCAST RECORDINGS AVAILABLE Ronnie Van Zant, Bob Burns, and Gary Rossington had been playing together since 1964 under various names, but in 1970 they became Lynyrd Skynyrd, and so began one of the most dynamic albeit tragic music careers in the annals of rock music. Crafting a distinctive southern sound through a creative blend of country, blues, and a British rock influence, the group became incredibly popular through the 1970s and it was only the tragic events of autumn 1977- that do not need repeating here - which stopped their onward march through the music biz.

Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991 is the sixth studio album by American Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. It was the band's first new studio album since 1977's Street Survivors and the first following a 1977 plane crash that claimed the lives of three members of the band. Lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant and lead guitarist Steve Gaines perished in a 1977 plane crash in Mississippi, and Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991 is the first album to feature their replacements, vocalist Johnny Van Zant and guitarist Randall Hall. It also marks the return of original guitarist Ed King, who parted ways with the band while touring in support of Nuthin' Fancy in 1975. It was also the final Lynyrd Skynyrd album to feature drummer Artimus Pyle, who survived the crash. Guitarist and founding member Allen Collins also survived the 1977 plane crash but died in 1990 from chronic pneumonia.

I dont normally write reviews, but in response to a certain negative review I felt I had to!. Firstly I have to state I have actually purchased this set, and have always been a massive fan of this awesome band. This box set contains at least 4 of the best southern rock albums, from one of the finest bands ever to come from the southern states of America! Why they didnt include the first album from the original line up (pronounced leh-nerd skin-nerd) instead of the 2003 album Vicious Cycle I dont know as it would have made much more sense to include all 5 albums from the original line up before tragedy struck this amazing band.

Twenty is the ninth studio album by Lynyrd Skynyrd released in 1997. The title of the album refers to the fact that it had been twenty years since the plane crash which killed original lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines. For this album the band brought in two Southern rock veterans, Rickey Medlocke, who had been a drummer for the band briefly before forming Blackfoot, and Hughie Thomasson of the Outlaws. The track "Travelin' Man" is the first studio recording of the song from the original band's 1976 live album One More From The Road. Making use of modern technology, the band was able to use original singer Ronnie Van Zant's vocal tracks on parts of the song, in order to create a duet between Johnny and Ronnie. The Album Cover is a fictional drawing of Monument Valley on the Navajo reservation.

It is best known for popularizing the Southern rock genre during the 1970s. Originally called My Backyard, the band was also known by names such as The Noble Five and One Percent, before finally deciding on "Lynyrd Skynyrd" in 1969. The band gained worldwide recognition for its live performances and signature songs "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird". Van Zant, along with guitarist Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines, were killed in an airplane crash on October 20, 1977, putting an abrupt end to the 1970s era of the band.

On August 21, 1976, Lynyrd Skynyrd took the stage at Knebworth Park in England as part of a daylong festival that also included among others Todd Rundgren’s Utopia, 10cc and headliners The Rolling Stones.
With Ronnie Van Zant’s all-in vocals and their famed triple guitar attack featuring Gary Rossington, Allen Collins and Steve Gaines, Lynyrd Skynyrd delivered an electric performance in front of a crowd estimated between 150,000 and 200,000, which has gone down as one of the band’s greatest performances.
Their entire performance from that day is here for you to witness the classic Lynyrd Skynyrd in all its glory.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is the definitive Southern rock band, fusing the overdriven power of blues-rock with a rebellious Southern image and a hard rock swagger. Skynyrd never relied on the jazzy improvisations of the Allman Brothers. Instead, they were a hard-living, hard-driving rock & roll band. They may have jammed endlessly on-stage, but their music remained firmly entrenched in blues, rock, and country. Throughout the band's early records, frontman Ronnie Van Zant demonstrated a knack for lyrical detail and a down-to-earth honesty that had more in common with country than rock & roll.

Having endured the loss of yet another bandmember with the passing of original bassist Leon Wilkeson, Skynyrd picks up the pieces yet again and delivers the goods the way only it can. Lyrically, the band hasn't stretched out its list of topics in any new directions, but quite honestly, who cares? This is Skynyrd. This isn't music to study to or scratch your chin by – this isn't the soundtrack to relaxing nights sipping instant coffee and talking about deep feelings. This is homegrown music that's about partying and rock & roll, with a little bit of contemplative soul-searching mixed in for good measure. The music is still top-notch, probably the best it's been since the early '90s.
