Francois-Xavier Roth and Les Siècles present a fascinating new interpretation of Mahler's Symphony No.1. It features the first period instrument recording of the 1893-94 version, using a performing edition prepared by musicologists Anna Stoll Knecht and Benjamin Garzia, working in collaboration with Universal Edition. Initially presented as a symphonic poem entitled Titan, the work was met with severe criticism as it developed. This fascinating reconstruction using the composer's Hamburg and Weimar manuscripts testifies to the genius of one of the greatest symphonists of the modern era.

Further proof that the old saw that there are no second acts in American lives is a bunch of malarkey: since returning to action with the Savages in 2011, Barrence Whitfield has been kicking out a steady stream of recordings that rank with his stellar sides of the '80s for sheer howling R&B mania. Whitfield has long been a man who doesn't care much for the distinctions between rock & roll and rhythm & blues, and that hasn't changed a bit on 2018's Soul Flowers of Titan, though this time out, he seems to be digging a bit deeper into straightforward blues territory than he has on his past few sessions.

It’s been six years since Greece’s Septicflesh reinvigorated their sound with the epic Communion, and not much has changed. On Titan, one finds the same mixture of cinematic orchestrals, layered growls, and pneumatic drums. What’s lacking at times is cohesion—often, Septicflesh’s polished, overproduced sound feels haphazard and directionless. Still, tracks like “Order of Dracul” and “Prometheus” have all of the grandiosity and elephantine marching riffs needed to have fans of Dimmu Borgir raising their fists

There’s a whole world contained within Yamantaka // Sonic Titan. They’re a Noh-Wave prog collective, a black-and-white (and sometimes red) theatre company, an operatic psych cult, and the speculative prophets of humanity’s impending doom. Above it all, though, they’re a thunderous rock band, and on their third album, DIRT, they’re the heaviest they’ve ever been. DIRT is the band’s first album since 2013’s UZU, their second straight to be shortlisted for the Polaris Prize as one of the best Canadian albums of the year.

Rafael Kubelik, the Czech conductor, was in every way a big man: tall and robust in physique, he was the most generous of human beings and he inspired devoted affection among his friends and colleagues. This complete Decca collection finds Kubelík working with the Wiener Philharmoniker, the Israel Philharmonic, the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, and for a single operatic extract, the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Rafael Kubelík had made his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic at the 1950 Salzburg Festival, and together they made a series of recordings during the late 1950s which have long been prized for their warmth and spontaneous-sounding expression.
