Malcolm Earl "Mal" Waldron (August 16, 1925 – December 2, 2002) was an American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger. He started playing professionally in New York in 1950, after graduating from college. In the following dozen years or so Waldron led his own bands and played for those led by Charles Mingus, Jackie McLean, John Coltrane, and Eric Dolphy, among others. During Waldron's period as house pianist for Prestige Records in the late 1950s, he appeared on dozens of albums and composed for many of them, including writing his most famous song, "Soul Eyes", for Coltrane. Waldron was often an accompanist for vocalists, and was Billie Holiday's regular accompanist from April 1957 until her death in July 1959.

Among the many prodigious and tragic talents in the Prestige Records stable of the mid-'50s, pianist Mal Waldron was one of the most prodigious and tragic. Waldron's abilities on the piano made him an accompanist of choice (he was Billie Holiday's from early 1957 until her death); his style in group improvisational formats was daring and innovative, pushing the envelope of hard bop and post-bop into more progressive areas.

Although possibly best known as a fine composer and arranger, Mal Waldron, born New York City in 1925 started his musical career playing alto sax until he ran into a guy they called “Bird” and smartly changed over to the piano! Incredibly Mal had over 100 albums released under his own name during his long career and featured in countless more as composer, arranger and pianist. His name has probably appeared on more albums in the extensive Avid Jazz catalogue than any other musician! It would probably take less time and space to name the musicians Mal hasn’t played with than has! In 1956 he was recommended by Jackie McLean to take the chair as house pianist for the famed Prestige label…

Mal Waldron was a remarkably versatile piano player, able to work in many different contexts, from Billie Holiday to Eric Dolphy. This ability made him invaluable as musical director for Prestige Records, where the recording dates were often little more than jam sessions. Soul Eyes: The Mal Waldron Memorial Album collects 11 tracks, recorded between 1955 and 1962, that Waldron played on and/or led, including a mammoth version of the title cut, featuring John Coltrane, Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers, and others, that clocks in at 17-plus minutes. Although all the cuts have been previously released (not always under Waldron's name), it's nice to have this overview of one of his most fertile periods.
