In 1958 the first records appeared under the banner of Harmonia Mundi, the company founded by the French journalist Bernard Coutaz. Half a century later, Coutaz is still in charge and his creation has developed into one of the most important independent classical labels in the world, carefully preserving the same values and virtues. Next year's anniversary is being marked by this collection, a retrospective of 50 works.

The unprecedented expansion of music in the age of enlightenment
The eighteenth century is probably the most extraordinary period of transformation Europe has known since antiquity. Political upheavals kept pace with the innumerable inventions and discoveries of the age; every sector of the arts and of intellectual and material life was turned upside down.

The eighteenth century is probably the most extraordinary period of transformation Europe has known since Antiquity. Political upheavals kept pace with the innumerable inventions and discoveries of the age– every sector of the arts and of intellectual and material life was turned upside down. Between the end of the reign of Louis XIV and the Revolution of 1789, music in its turn underwent a radical mutation that struck at the very heart of a well-established musical language. In this domain too, we are all children of the Age of Enlightenment: our conception of music and the way we ‘consume’ it still follow in many respects the agenda set by the eighteenth century.

Genre: Classic/Violin

A list of minor caveats to begin. First, audiophiles should be aware that this is, like all Kennedy's recordings, an analogue recording digitally processed and mastered. To my ears it sounds fine, vivid and positive, even if perhaps a little close. Second, Kennedy, who often takes up space with anti-critical diatribes, has this time allowed a critic, the acceptably blokeish Rob Cowan, to write the booklet notes, which strain to paint Bach as a bit of a punkish rebel himself. Third, Kennedy being Kennedy, he allows himself a degree of improvisatorial licence here and there at which some might raise an eyebrow but which to me seem idiomatic, spontaneous and pleasing. Indeed it is difficult not to like the entire disc. Kennedy makes a wonderful sound and seems genuinely thrilled by the challenge of getting his fingers around the notes. There's a sureness about his approach, a swaggering certitude in tone, articulation, phrasing that is hard to resist, and nothing about his playing is bland. He is partnered more than ably in the Double Concerto by Daniel Stabrawa and in the Violin and Oboe Concerto by Albrecht Mayer, and the conductorless strings of the Berlin Philharmonic make a rich but never swamping sound. While collectors who want something less occasional, more subtle, and more in the manner of the Baroque period should still look to an account like that of Andrew Manze, my benchmark, this is clearly a disc that will sit comfortably on the shelves alongside it.

These are fine performances of the foundational documents of the modern instrumental sonata, but listeners should sample them and be sure they're on board with all of the assumptions being made here. Corelli's 12 Violin Sonatas, Op. 5, are divided between the sonata da camera (chamber sonata) and sonata da chiesa (church sonata) types, between short suites of dance-based movements and abstract, mostly binary structures, respectively.

Nicola Porpora, a contemporary of Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Haydn (and a very young Mozart) is best remembered today as a famous singing teacher and opera composer. During his long career (he lived to age 81) he suffered many employment-related difficulties and disappointments that caused him to move frequently. Naples (where he was born), Venice, Dresden, and Vienna (where he taught Haydn) all enjoyed Porpora's reputable presence, and he even spent a period in London at the behest of a group seeking to unseat Handel and his opera company from its preeminent position. In addition to his operas and vocal music, Porpora wrote instrumental works such as the six violin sonatas featured here, which are drawn from a set of 12. Although anyone familiar with Italian Baroque and early Classical-style solo violin music will discover nothing particularly original on this generally fine recording, if you enjoy that genre and period you'll find much here to indulge and satisfy your taste.

The English Concert is an "authentic performance" ensemble, founded by harpsichordist and conductor Trevor Pinnock in 1973. The group quickly established itself as one of Britain's leading orchestras in the then-young field of performing Baroque works on Baroque instruments. The English Concert and the energetic Pinnock helped put historical performance on the charts. The orchestra has a reputation for stylish, lively, and high-quality music-making. Its sound is light, bright, and clear. Its strings usually employ no vibrato, and its winds have a woody, attractive tone that blends well with strings and with the fortepiano.
