In this new album, Florence Bolton and Benjamin Perrot revisit the composer who gave their ensemble its delightful name, ‘La Rêveuse’. Drawing on his heritage (Sainte-Colombe), his friendships (Robert de Visée) and his own visionary genius, Marin Marais blazed new trails for his instrument in his second book of viol pieces (1701). Alongside the customary dances and sets of variations, he invented the ‘character pieces’ that were to become so popular in the eighteenth century.
Marin Marais possesses the grace, elegance and wit so appealing in the goût français of the eighteenth century. The character pieces of his last two books depict portraits, landscapes and little genre scenes in painterly fashion, and are an unsurpassed highpoint of the viol repertory.
Early music ensemble Earthly Angels was founded in 2016 by Kajsa Dahlbäck and is affiliated with Vaasa Baroque. Its first release was awarded "Album of the Year 2018" by the Finnish Broadcasting Corporation. The ensemble Earthly Angels performs vocal chamber music mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries. It focuses on a close, embodied relationship between text and music, on finding new interesting music from the early music repertoire, and on making early music meaningful for today's audiences.
Marais (1656-1728) was once among the least-known French baroque composers, a specialist in the viole (or viola da gamba), an instrument that was already obsolescent in his lifetime but one that he raised to unprecedented heights of technical finesse and expressive power. Now, since the film "Tous les Matins du Monde," in which his role was taken by Gerard Depardieu, his discography has risen to a full, well-deserved column in the Schwann-Opus catalogue. This beautifully styled recording of three suites and a caprice by the Charivari Agreable trio is a fine addition to his discography.
"La couleur est d'une exquise volupté , La qualité instrumentale est du plus haut niveau" Répertoire
Twenty years after his harmonia mundi recordings, reviving the tradition of performing the great French harpsichord composers (Rameau, Couperin) on the piano, Alexandre Tharaud now joins forces with his longstanding partner Jean- Guihen Queyras to explore the works of Marin Marais… on piano and cello. Drawing on their respective experiences in Baroque music, the two artists have taken up the challenge of presenting the essence of the master of the viola da gamba: timeless, even universal.
